Why No Text or Voice Options?

There are so many reasons not to rely on text only communications. Both text and voice mail options are disabled on the phone line for a number of reasons, including:

No Text Policy

    • Text is obsolete, like payphones, beepers and telegraph.
    • Phone coverage is not always available
      • I work in large data centers where there is no coverage or phones (cameras) are restricted.
      • Phone battery died.
      • Out of coverage area.
      • Phone was damaged.
    • Internet coverage is much more widely available, even in areas with no cell coverage. Communicating through Internet based connections allows multiple means to be reached, faster:
      • I have multiple devices that can access my communications including desktop, laptop, mobile phone, library...
      • My desktop has dual display four feet wide and a full size QWERTY that I can use quickly and efficiently. My phone is barely three inches wide and I loathe tediously tapping on a tiny type pad.
    • Message management in email has the most flexibility and features. Email is the preferred method of contact.
      • An inbox easily groups messages to be sorted by who they are from, date, subject or other fields.
      • Email can be searched
      • Email can be sorted and archived
    • Did you know that you can send a text to an email address just like a phone number? It is not great because it is based on an old form of communications.

No Voice Mail Policy

    • Voice Mail is obsolete and was useful when phones were not mobile and caller ID was not prevalent.
    • Most voice mail messages are rhetorical in nature and will be repeated when the requested call back is connected.
    • Mail box fills up and new messages are rejected. Got old and was inefficient so the VM feature is permanently disabled at the carrier level.
