These two graphic projects were the culminating projects for ETEC 5313 Principles of Visual Literacy that I took the Spring semester of 2020. The course dealt with principles, actions, and tools of visual literacy. Though I have been a screen printer for many years and have done illustration and various graphics, I found this course to be very engaging and useful. The principles taught on emphasizing figure and ground, as well as the section on Gestalt have helped me in subsequent graphics related projects.
The assignment for this project was to develop an infographic about an organization or entity of our choice. I chose Brigham Young University's Pathway Worldwide program because I was interested in the program itself and wanted to do the research that would be required. I spent quite a bit of time acquiring the various statistical data on the program as well as comparative information on costs of obtaining various degrees in other main stream programs as well as contextual information on the differences between earning capacities for nondegree versus degree holders.
The next step was to develop the graphics to present the statistics as well as the other pertinent information about the program. I used various principles of design to chunk related information so that there was a hierarchy evident in the document. I organized the paper from the perspective of:
Problem-----> Effect------> Solution with the lower one third of the page showing the solution which was the Pathways Program. I gave the tuition estimates and then the growth of the program.
As I was searching for some type of brochure to develop for this project, my wife suggested that I do one highlighting our home-based business. As I thought about what I wanted the finished project to be like, I felt that formatting it as a foldable mailer would be appropriate. It would make it multi-faceted so that it could be given to a prospective customer by hand or mailed as needed.
The fact that the piece would be folded to mail gave me the idea of dividing the content into three columns. I utilized several graphics as our business is very visually oriented.
For the front I built a design that would visually frame the colors information that would serve as the hook. The antique sewing machine served as a reinforcement conveying the idea that the bulk of our business revolved around fabric and sewing.
Two of the inside panels highlight our work. Rosezanna's seamstress work takes center stage on the middle panel and my screen printing and commercial embroidery are on the right panel.
In laying out the brochure, I again relied on many of the principles from the Visual Literacy course. Which reinforced the benefit that I received from this instruction.
