This TPCK lesson plan was built around the children's book; It Looked Like Spilt Milk by Charles G. Shaw as a project for ETEC 5203 Foundations of Educational Technology. It incorporates the principles of the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge educational model, which emphasizes that content and pedagogy should be the basis of any use of technology in teaching. The model focuses on three contexts of knowledge that come together to provide resources for the teacher to utilize to achieve their learning goals for the students.
The book itself is a sweet look at what clouds can look like to children. It builds visualization and reading skills in children as they read the words and look at the pictures together.
As seen in the introduction of the lesson plan, the plan spans a five day period of time devoted to the book. The learning path progresses from the teacher reading to the students with the students repeating sentences and the teacher stopping to introduce new words through successive days of the students using iPads and the Quizlet app to practice and develop fluency, and eventually recording and viewing themselves reading the book. The culmination on the final day is an assessment to test for progress.
The final page of the lesson plan template shows the designer's responses to the TPCK oriented questions that prompt the designer through the considerations associated with the use of appropriate technologies for the learning experience.
This lesson was indicative of the information and skills that I learned from this course which focused on the underlying learning theories and various models of teaching. It has changed the way that I look at designing instruction.
