Integration of MOOC Technology into Home Schooling Methods focuses on the use of the Independence Focused Learning Model (IFLM) which two ETEC students and I developed to guide the integration of emerging technologies into the teaching process. The integration of Massive Open Online Courses into home-based learning in a prime candidate for this model. The premise for the IFLM is that the teacher (the parent(s) for home schoolers) function more as a guide or coach with an increased emphasis on peer to peer interactions. The benefits would be the students learning to give and receive help and critique. MOOCs have the capability to develop a learning environment that furnishes both learning content and a community of learning via the various web-based communication tools available.
A primary focus of this model is to develop student who can learn and act independently while being comfortable in assisting others and asking for help when needed. These team-based skills are in high demand in today's work place.
This learning environment is more student-centric than teacher-focused as might be found in main-stream education. MOOCS incorporate direct textual delivery of content that is enhanced by video lessons and access to hyperlinks that promote discovery and choice based self-direction. MOOCS also provide quick feedback on quizzes and other assessments. And, of course, the online collaborative tools available with today's technologies promotes interactions that the students did not have when we home-schooled my daughter.
As I reflect on my experience developing this model, I realize that researching and literature review were coupled with development of a theory-based instructional model.
Taking ETEC 6393 Issues and Trend in Educational Technologies in the Fall of 2019 was a watershed course for my ETEC career. I developed a love for literature review that semester. The paper that this page introduces is a product of that process.
My wife and I homeschooled one of our children many years ago in the pre-web based days, and came away from the experience fairly disappointed with the lack of supporting resources that seemed to be available at that time. This left me with a residual interest in how mainstream instructional design and resources could enhance the home-based learning genre. That, coupled with recent discussions with one of my grandchildren, enrolled at that time in public school managed homeschooling, led me to choose the concept of integrating Massive Open Online Course resources into home-based learning.
As the literature review I did on MOOCs and homeschooling unfolded, I began to realize how much potential there is in utilizing web-based educational resources to enrich the home-schooling experience.
Of course, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, this became the hottest of hot topics as educators and homeschoolers scrambled to adjust.
