This Screen Printing Curriculum is designed to be applicable to older High School Students or Adult participants in an Adult Education setting. It was completed as a project for CIED 5423. The curriculum spans an eight week module in which students work in groups to do research and presentations, work individually on projects, and participate as a group in critique sessions in which they talk about prominent artists as well as their own work.
The curriculum was designed using the Understanding By Design Curriculum Method. The model is very process-oriented and is formatted to facilitate a thorough thought process that leads the instructional designer through the progression from identifying desired results, through determining acceptable evidence that there is understanding and transfer of knowledge, to planning learning experiences and interactions that support and implement the predetermined objectives and goals.
This project was particularly enjoyable for me because it combined my love for Screen Printing with the ability to develop a hands-on curriculum that accomplished specific objectives. The tabular format of the form seen below prompted me through the process of delineating what the objective was, what the student would know and be able to do as a result of the lesson, and to flesh out how the instructor would assess I was originally an Art Education Major in college with the intent to teach.
Life intervened and I ended up first becoming a Tool & Die Maker and second obtaining a Bachelors degree in Management. Later, as a trainer and instructional designer, I utilized my artistic background as well as years of training apprentices to develop and deliver instructional content that were effective. However, my exposure to learning theory, and teaching methods in the University of Arkansas teaching program has given me the ability to develop theory based curriculum that are more effective.
