This project, the development of a web-based training site for the associates working at AAM Subiaco was the culminating final project for ETEC 5373 Web Design. The intent of the site was to provide a resource for company associates and outside vendor to access safety and environmental information. Their interactions with the site would serve to document via completions of on-line quizzes, fulfillment of government mandated training requirements. My roles as Environmental, Health, Safety Manager and as the Training Coordinator at the time prompted my choice of this particular choice of web sites to develop. The goal was to provide an easy way for associates to interact with safety topics on demand.
For privacy and confidentiality, this website content cannot be accessed outside of the company for which it was developed.
ETEC 5373 Web Design exposed me to much more than the mere use of code to build a web site. Such topics as planning the site, the importance of providing accessibility, the role of copyright adherence, and Analytics made me aware that there was much more to building a web site. I found that sitemaps and careful planning of how users interact with and navigate around the various site pages makes the difference between satisfied and frustrated users. I particularly found the concept of responsive design interesting and useful. I had not previously understood how designers ensure that the website needed to be coded so that users could be equally successful in interfacing with the site from a variety of platforms.
Search Engine Optimization was another topic that was a light bulb moment for me. I came away with the understanding that making the site findable from a variety search perspectives was important if the designer wished to draw users to his or her site.
I received favorable feedback and reviews as I piloted the site with my associates. I learned to use the various features of Google Sites, to access and adjust the code features for the pages, carefully plan and link to the various groupings of pages, and most especially to be judicial in the use of visuals versus textual content. Through this course I now feel comfortable developing the site architecture, using links, embedding images, and incorporating external video and text content that I store on You Tube and Google Drive. In other words, developing useful and efficient educational web sites.
