Context of Engineering
Exploring Contexts of Technology and Engineering
Grade Level: Middle School (6th-8th Grade)
Duration: 45-60 minutes
Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify various contexts in which technology and engineering are applied in everyday life and understand their significance.
Materials:
Whiteboard
Markers
Projector (optional)
Handouts with scenarios (see Activity 1)
Computer or tablet with internet access (for research activity)
Lesson Outline:
Introduction (10 minutes):
Begin by asking students, "What comes to mind when you think about technology and engineering?" Write their responses on the board.
Explain that technology and engineering are essential parts of our daily lives, and they are used in various contexts. Today, we will explore these contexts and understand how they impact us.
Activity 1: Identifying Contexts (15 minutes):
Distribute handouts with different scenarios or pictures that depict technology and engineering in action. Each scenario should represent a different context, such as transportation, communication, healthcare, entertainment, and more.
In pairs or small groups, have students discuss the scenarios and identify the context in which technology and engineering are applied. Encourage them to think about how these technologies improve our lives.
Ask each group to share one scenario and its identified context with the class. Discuss their findings as a group, adding any additional insights to the board.
Activity 2: Real-World Examples (15 minutes):
Show students a list of real-world examples of technology and engineering contexts using a projector or handout. Examples could include:
Building bridges and skyscrapers
Developing smartphone apps
Designing electric cars
Creating medical devices like pacemakers
Constructing eco-friendly buildings
Improving agricultural machinery
Developing video games and virtual reality experiences
Discuss these examples with the students and ask them to consider how these technologies have impacted society and their lives.
Activity 3: Research and Presentation (10-15 minutes):
Assign each student or group a specific technology or engineering context to research further. They can use the internet or library resources to gather information.
Have students create a brief presentation (1-2 minutes) about their assigned context. Encourage them to include examples and explain how these technologies benefit society.
Allow time for each group to present their findings to the class.
Conclusion (5 minutes):
Summarize the main points of the lesson: Technology and engineering are used in various contexts to improve our lives and address different challenges.
Ask students to reflect on the importance of understanding these contexts in our increasingly technological world.
Provide opportunities for questions and discussions.
Homework (Optional): Assign a short homework assignment for students to find examples of technology and engineering in their own lives or community and report back to the class in the next session.
Assessment: Assess students based on their participation in discussions, the quality of their presentations, and their ability to identify and explain contexts of technology and engineering.
