BEC-TV PRESS RELEASE -- Spring 2024
This spring, BEC-TV received two Student Production Awards from the Upper Midwest Emmy Foundation, recognizing excellence in media productions. In addition, BEC-TV Student Tech Jakob Miskell received special recognition as a 2024 AV All-Star.
Schools from across the Midwest competed for these awards, which are given at both the High School and College level.
Led by student producer Asher Barrett (Kennedy sophomore), BEC-TV's Inside Football program won a Student Production Award in the Sports Program category. BEC-TV's Boys' Hockey coverage, led by student producer Jakob Miskell (Kennedy senior), won a Student Production Award in the Live Sporting Event category. Both productions also received nominations for a national award from the Emmy organization.
Tom Ringdal, BEC-TV director since the dawn of time, is proud of his student volunteers who team together from all of Bloomington’s Middle and High schools.
"I am so proud of these hardworking kids who are committed to learning new skills everyday. This honor is a 'win' for ALL of our student techs, adult mentors, and staff. I've always said that BEC-TV has the VERY best techs around. These recognitions prove it!"
Each spring, the Emmy Foundation also recognizes an "AV All Star," a student chosen from schools across the entire Midwest who exemplifies excellence in working behind the scenes to make the magic of television happen.
This year, BEC-TV’s Jakob Miskell, a Kennedy senior, was selected as a 2024 AV All-Star. In two years volunteering with BEC-TV, Jakob has been a part of over 200 shoots, and counting. He is known by his peers as a strong team player who brings a radiant, positive energy to every production, and has taken on key leadership roles in the past year.
Says Ringdal, "Jakob is sharp, a quick learner, and gets the best out of everyone on the crew. His unique 'side-by-side' approach to leadership gently pulls the best from his crew, giving them skills and tips and allowing them grace and encouragement when they fall short. If things go awry in a live production, he stays calm and unfazed and works out solutions. Jakob treats his peers and staff with the same high level of respect, and - in return - he has earned theirs."
This marks an astonishing 4th year in a row that a BEC-TV student has been honored with this exceptional award.
BEC-TV is part of Bloomington Schools, but funding for the entire operation comes from outside sources and funds they raise themselves. Students in grades 7–12 can participate at no charge. Over the years, BEC-TV has teamed with schools and students to produce and air over 30,000 different shows from Bloomington's schools. Programming can be viewed via stream, Apple TV, Roku, cable, and on-demand. www.bectv.org
