Tech Update: Special Edition Spring 2020

NATAS Awards Ceremony

BEC-TV has 2 programs that have been nominated by the Upper Midwest chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (the "Emmy" people) for their Student Production Awards! The Crystal Pillar awards presented recognize excellence in media production for high School & college/university students.  Be sure to scroll down to see all the exciting ways BEC-TV Peeps are being honored at this.

We find out winners on Friday, April 3. There was going to be a fancy awards ceremony, complete with good food and networking and photo walls and a big room full of people dressed up real nice. Instead, the ceremony will be streamed (much like what they do for Nationals), and we can all watch from our respective homes.  (Dang COVID19!) The event stream can be found on The Upper Midwest Emmy Youtube Channel. Ceremony starts at 7pm.

But hey,  even though we can't be together for the awards ceremony like we were last year we still want to be some flavor of "together" during the event, right?  Soooo, in addition to watching the awards, have your "Second Screen" on  'cuz  we'll be gathering via Google Meet that night. Join to catch up, connect, and celebrate with your BEC friends! The Google Meet will open at 6:30pm.

Dress up if you want, or not. If you do dress up, you can share photos on social media. Check out their site for more details on this. (We THINK they'll be putting up some of these, so let's have a good showing, eh?)

Siblings, parents, friends, and dogs are all welcome. (Emmaline's cat wanted to come too, but he barks too much!)

Looking forward to seeing you all Friday at 6:30pm!

Nominees

HERE is a list of all the nominees in the high school category. BEC has a football game and a hockey game nominated in the "Live Sports" category.

Of all the sports productions submitted to be recognized throughout the 5 state area, only four hit the bar to be nominated.  Of these, TWO (50%!) were BEC-TV shows.

Thanks to the entire BEC-TV Family for teaming together to raise the bar on ALL of our productions!

Special congrats to everyone on the Football Crew (Led by student Producer Joe Wiklund) and on the Hockey Crew (Led by Student Producer Zach Vacura)

Along with the these shows, we've also got people in the BEC Family who are either nominated for programming or have already been name as winners

Zach Vacura

Congrats to BEC-TV's own ZACH VACURA. The Upper Midwest Emmy Foundation announced Zach as this year's "AV ALL STAR" for the 5 state area. Zach is incredibly talented and dedicated, and one swell guy, to boot. We are so lucky to have him as part of our BEC-TV Team.

Alex Redding

Congrats to BEC-TV's own ALEX REDDING , winner of the Ulysses Carlini Media Scholarship

Alex is a 2017 Grad of Kennedy and is currently attending Hennepin Technical College. Though he cut his teeth with BEC-TV doing all-things-technical, these days you're more likely to find him behind the mic announcing games. It's rare to have the talent to excel at both ends of productions!

Here's the scoop for his scholarship:

ALEX REDDING – HENNEPIN TECHNICAL COLLEGE:

Alex hasn’t backed down on a challenge learning new media production techniques, even when learning itself can sometimes be challenging. As a young adult on the autism spectrum, Alex says one of the biggest challenges for is knowing how to navigate and understand social interactions. Alex says he typically has a lot of anxiety about having to work with a large team, but says he’s been able to overcome his challenges and see them as strengths. Alex says he will “hyperfocus” and be detail oriented. He will notice details which create insightful analysis critical to understanding key aspects of an entire production. Alex says his attention to detail has also allowed him to operate highly technical production equipment, and software to improve all of his media production value.

Elaina Fourniea

A program Elaina co-produced is nominated in Short Form: Non-Fiction in the College category. Road to Recovery: Elaina's Journey Through Mental Health.

Elaina is a 2017 Grad of Kennedy, and is now attending St. Cloud State University.  She's been part of the BEC-TV family for years, and (speaking of family...) is Paul's little sister.

About the Selection Process

1) High Schools and Colleges in the five state area submit some of their best work for consideration.

2) A panel of video professionals reviews all submissions and decides which will get nominated to move forward.

3) A panel of judges scores each nomination on a set of technical & artistic standards.

From the nominated productions they can choose one or many winners for each category.

They could also decide that none of the entries in a certain category meet their tough criteria.  (This in not uncommon)

We're ALL Winners!

We were required to list the student crew and adult advisors for each program, and they appear on published information on nominees.

While we are SUPER proud of each listed on those crews, we really want to underscore that we're considering this honor as a "win" for ALL our or student techs, adult mentors, and staff.

Each of you has helped build BEC-TV into the organization that produces some of the finest student-level productions in the country.
