Multilingual Learners
Google Translate gives students control of the language they use to navigate information online (including on Canvas). It also gives teachers the ability to translate student work submitted in languages other than English.
Supporting English Language Learners
Top recommendation
Every ELL student should have this extension installed on their Chromebooks.
Allows students to highlight text on any web page and get instant translation into preferred language (scores of languages supported). Will also translate entire pages.
Also offers instant audio pronunciation of selected text and/or translated text.
Brief demonstration video shows how to translate and hear audio for selected text.
Google Translate video start at 0:45 to see how to translate a whole page.
Important Considerations
Translation is not the same phenomenon as language acquisition.
Students need to be able to submit work in the language that best shows their current ability.
We need to promote English language acquisition as well as maintaining and developing the home language.
For mobile devices
Instant two-way spoken dialogue translation.
Camera feature not as powerful as Microsoft Translator, but does offer instant visual translation of printed text (can’t export/save)
Using the web version or the app, there are several useful tools that support translations.
