PE 1: FITNESS / TEAM ACTIVITIES P422X

Fee: $6 for swim unit

This class is designed for incoming freshmen where they will learn and apply various health aspects of fitness, the components of fitness, the FITT principle, fitness testing, and goal setting while participating in team sports and activities. Potential activities may include but are not limited to volleyball, basketball, soccer, flag football, and ultimate frisbee.

AEROBICS – P425X

Length/Credit(s): 1 semester/ 0.5 PE credit or .5 Elective credit

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of PE 1

Aerobics builds on the fitness concepts learned in PE 1 and is best suited for students wanting to learn how to become physically fit by exploring traditional and nontraditional modes of movement unrelated to sport. Possible units: HIIT activities, dance, low impact weight lifting, pilates, power walking, step aerobics, tai chi, water aerobics, yoga. Students will create and implement their own fitness plan with the opportunity to work with others or independently. This class can be repeated for elective credit.

RECREATIONAL GAMES – P500X

Recreation Games builds on the fitness concepts learned in PE 1 and is designed to promote growth and interest in nontraditional lifelong activities. Possible units: pickleball, badminton, capture the cone, handball, kickball, spikeball, ultimate frisbee. Students will create and implement their own fitness plan and practice plan with the opportunity to work with others or independently. This class can be repeated for elective credit.

TEAM SPORTS – P505X

Team Sports builds on the fitness concepts learned in PE 1 and is designed to promote growth and interest in traditional team sports. Units of play are basketball, flag football, soccer, and volleyball. Students will work exclusively in teams to create and perform roles consistent within the team sports model which includes- athletic trainer/wellness director, manager, coach, and sports marketing director. This class can be repeated for elective credit.

WEIGHT TRAINING 1 – P401X

Weight Training 1 builds on the fitness concepts learned in PE 1 and is best suited for novice or experienced lifters seeking to improve their muscular strength and endurance as it relates to weight lifting and physical enhancement. Students will develop and build on their individual skill set to increase strength, power, speed, and aerobic capacity. This class will incorporate core and Olympic style lifts, agility training, conditioning, and sport specific training. This class can be repeated for elective credit.

WEIGHT TRAINING 3 – P4031 & P4032

Weight Training 3 is a year-long course designed for highly focused and highly motivated students wishing to realize their fullest physical potential. This course will provide an opportunity to greatly increase one’s personal strength and fitness level. Emphasis will be placed on advanced movement through resistance training along with moderate to intense conditioning. In order to take this course, students must have taken and passed PE: Fitness-Required.

Students taking Health 1 will gain the ability to access, understand, appraise, apply, and advocate for health information and services in order to maintain or enhance one’s own health and the health of others.  This will be done through the study of mental/emotional health, injury prevention, drug awareness/prevention, violence prevention, and sexual health.  The class will be engaging, inclusive, informative, and will provide life-long health and wellness skills.  Health 1 is a required course for graduation and should be taken before Health 2.

HEALTH 2 – H202X

Students taking Health 2 will gain the ability to access, comprehend, analyze, apply, and advocate for health information and services in order to maintain or enhance one’s own health and the health of others.  This will be done through the study of healthy eating, mental/emotional health, disease prevention, drug awareness/prevention, violence prevention, and sexual health.  The class will be engaging, inclusive, informative, and will provide life-long health and wellness skills.  Health 2 is a required course for graduation, Health 1 is a prerequisite for Health 2.

FIRST AID – H311X

The purpose of First Aid is to develop knowledge and skills to provide emergency care to persons injured in an accident or stricken by sudden illness. Students will learn procedures and techniques of basic life support for adult, child and infant victims of airway obstruction, respiratory arrest and/or cardiac arrest as well as proper methods and procedures for applying CPR and AED in a given emergency situation. Upon successful completion of this course, students will earn an American Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR/AED Adult/Child and Infant CPR Certificate.  This course is for elective credit only.

Calling all students who are interested in lifelong fitness!  Are you someone who wants to stay fit for life or you're an athlete looking to improve your performance? Then this class is for you!  This project-based course focuses on the physical and mental wellness of anyone interested in fitness as a lifestyle or athletics.  Students will learn about lifelong fitness and how to stay active in order to improve their health over the course of their lives.  As an inquiry course, students will have the opportunity to design projects and assessments based on their own personal interests.  This course covers many topics, such as helping students manage their physical and mental wellness, how to stay life-long fit, how to work in a team setting,  how to advocate for oneself or others, nutrition for fitness, as well as fitness-related eating disorders. Students will learn prevention and care of common fitness injuries and potential addiction and substance abuse.  Course objectives include helping students use goal setting techniques to enhance their health, accessing valid information and services within the community, strengthening interpersonal communication skills, and analyzing influences of peers, community, and media on personal behavior.  This course is for elective credit only.

HEALTH CAREERS - OFF SITE PROGRAM

HEALTH CAREERS 1 – 3221 & 3222

This is a full year introductory course for the student who has an interest in exploring or pursuing a career in health services. Students will learn core knowledge and skills common to major health careers. Areas of emphasis are medical terminology, medical ethics, safety in health care, college and career exploration, self-assessment portfolios, and some basic health care skills. Students will be involved in community health projects such as elementary school health screenings, blood drives and other related community experience. These students have the opportunity to be involved with HOSA: Future Health Professionals or other class leadership roles. The Red Cross course, Responding to Emergencies is a portion of the curriculum in which students will explore and demonstrate basic first aid, first aid in remote settings, healthcare professional CPR for adult, child and infant, and educational training in Automated External Defibrillation (AED). This is on BHS campus

ADV. HEALTH CAREERS – 3231 & 3232

PCC Credit Options: MP 111 Medical Terminology (4 PCC credits) and CG130H Introduction to Today's Careers (2 PCC credits)
This course is designed for senior students who have successfully completed Health Careers and Human Anatomy. First semester curriculum includes mastery of basic patient care skills, introductory pathophysiology of common diseases, professional skills and medical terminology. The curriculum also includes guest lecturers from diverse healthcare fields who explain their career pathways, share their expertise and provide updates on current practices. Second semester, students will be placed in the community to explore career options with healthcare professionals. Among the clinical sites offered to students are hospital, medical, dental, veterinary medicine, physical and occupational therapy, speech and rehabilitation, fitness, sports medicine, and medical social service. There are also options during 2nd semester to earn certification training in the areas of Emergency Medical Responder, EKG Technician, and Pharmacy Technician in lieu of some clinical career exploration. Students are encouraged to continue their membership in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). Advanced Health Careers provides students with a realistic view of career options. Clinical experiences allow students to collect valuable information facilitating educated decisions regarding their future in college or the workplace.

NURSE ASSISTANT 1 - 3241 & 3242

Fee(s): Program/uniform costs are approximately $75 as well as $106 paid to OSBN at the conclusion of the course for state CNA certification board exam. (Need-based scholarships are available)
CCC Credit Options: NUR 100 Nurse Assisting (7 CCC credits)

This full year course is designed to prepare students to perform routine nursing assistant tasks to clients in the following venues: long-term and skilled nursing care facilities, home care and community health agencies. There will be a minimum of 80 hours of classroom/lab instruction as mandated by the Oregon State Board of Nursing and 75 hours of clinical training that prepare NA students perform routine assistant tasks to clients in hospitals, long-term, community and skilled care facilities. Students will sit for the state licensing examination at the end of this course.
