Ceramics 3 is an advanced level course that provides additional training in wheel throwing and slip casting. Students will explore new clay bodies, glazes, and inventory/ price/ sell their wares to the student body during an annual sale. Students extend their experience with the art critique method and develop projects of their choosing. This course will prepare students interested in working in a creative field, particularly in ceramics.

Drawing 1 is a beginning art course focusing on communicating ideas visually. Through skill-enhancing projects and written assignments, students will develop a variety of drawing techniques and an understanding of the use of line, character building, shading and perspective. Students will explore drawing media including graphite, ink, colored pencils and oil pastels. We will get familiar with the elements of art and principles of design so that we can create attention-grabbing characters, exciting compositions, and artwork that expresses and communicates your inner world authentically.

Drawing 2 builds on the creative and technical skills learned in Drawing 1 to create thematic artworks that develop students’ personal vision. We will explore advanced compositional techniques, life drawing skills, color theory, and the fundamentals of comics and sequential art. The visual narrative projects will enrich students' exploration of new media like alcohol markers and advanced inking techniques. Throughout this course students will hone their unique artistic voice and fluency in the language of visual arts.

In this class we will use art making as a form of meditation to practice being in the moment. After taking this class, you will have tools to reduce anxiety and increase self confidence that you can use in and outside of school. We will explore mediums like drawing, printmaking, and ink washes that will expand your knowledge of the elements of art while helping you lead a happy and fulfilling life.

In Graphic Design 1, you will learn the basics of how to create fun and professional looking designs on programs such as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. You will learn the foundations of these programs as well and the basics of design. Topics may include color theory, fonts and text (typography), layout, and the elements and principles of design. You will learn through hands-on projects and critiques as well as written assignments that will expand your understanding of graphic design in the world. Example projects may include packaging design, restaurant menus, album covers, and more.

In this course you will expand upon your graphic design skills and learn advanced design techniques. This semester, your designs come off the computer and into the real world! You’ll learn to design and print stickers as well as other custom printed designs. Example projects and topics may include logos, film poster design, branding, and packaging. You will work extensively with Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. This is a studio course where you will spend the majority of the time creating. Students will learn through hands-on projects, and critiques, as well as written assignments.

In this course, you will expand your design skills even further. This is a production heavy class where you will have the opportunity to explore design projects that fit your interests and career goals. You will have an opportunity to work on larger, more complex projects. All of your designs will come off of the computer and into the world as finished items. You will learn through hands-on projects and critiques as well as written assignments. Example projects include:, book covers, t-shirt design, poster illustration, product labels, and designing a food truck.
GRAPHIC DESIGN 4 (GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERNSHIP) – F267X

This is a graphic design internship. In this course you will use graphic design skills to work with clients at Aloha and create real world graphic design projects. You will work directly with clients and learn how to help your client’s vision come to life. Some projects that have been done in the past include designing posters for the school musical, creating senior class buttons, designing logos for clubs and programs, and creating the shirts for Warrior Crew and incoming Freshman classes. You will also finish the semester with a design portfolio website to launch your own design freelance business. To take this course, you must be self motivated and committed to completing your projects on the given timelines. Please talk to Ms. Chiovaro in F16 if you are interested in this internship course.

In Painting 1, you will learn the basics of how to paint a picture! You will learn the foundations of acrylic painting. Topics may include value, texture, color mixing, and translating what you see into a painting. Example projects may include landscape paintings, color wheels, still lifes, and more!

In Painting 2, you will expand on your knowledge of acrylic painting and learn watercolor color painting as well. This course will be focused on adding your own voice and artisitc style into your paintings. You will be working on larger canvases to create more indepth paintings that bring personality and meaning to your work. Deepen your fundemental skills in brush control, color application, and accurate texture. The second half of the semester will be spent working on a large capstone painting bringing together all of your knowledge and skills.

This photography class continues to build on previous Photo 1 skills such as composition and design. While also adding SLR digital camera controls, exposure, and various styles including lifestyle, studio, documentary, and film photography. Students learn hands-on with practical assignments, explore different photography genres, and create a final online portfolio. Emphasis will be on personal voice and style.

Within this course, students will practice, experiment and revise their art. We will also explore how artists use their voice to connect to their identity and comment on their world. Students will assemble a portfolio to submit to the College Board in the spring. AP Studio Art is a college level art course that will help students explore their artistic voice and develop a portfolio for college.Students in this course are expected to register and pay in the Fall to take the National AP Exam in May.
