Cantilena is the main Treble AHS vocal ensemble, and is for students with advanced musical ability. This OSAA sanctioned choir competes in Metro League and State Choral competitions, and requires academic eligibility. This choir class will help you develop advanced vocal technique, literacy skills, and repertoire for treble ranges. Cantilena performs at Aloha High School concerts, area festivals, and community events year-round in a competitive and noncompetitive environment. This class is a year-long commitment. Note: this choir will occasionally meet outside of the regular school day.
MIXED CHOIR – F6121 & F6122
Chorale

This is the entry level mixed ensemble for treble and bass clef ranges and voices. This choir class focuses on music reading, performance and learning to sing in two and three part harmony. Students will learn music of various styles, including classical and modern pop and jazz and will perform at quarterly Aloha choral concerts. Note: this choir will occasionally meet outside of the regular school day.
CONCERT CHOIR – F6301 & F6302

Concert Choir is the advanced mixed AHS vocal ensemble, and is for students with advanced musical ability. This OSAA sanctioned choir competes in Metro League and State Choral competitions, and requires academic eligibility. Students study and perform music literature of various style periods, and travel to competitions and festivals around the state. Vocal technique, literacy, musicianship and performance skills are further developed for treble and bass voices.
ADVANCED VOCAL ENSEMBLE – (Do Not Enter Into Synergy Since Class is Offered Before School)
New Day Singers

Prerequisite: Concurrent enrolled in Concert Choir or Treble Choir & Audition in April.
New Day Singers is AHS Choir’s most advanced ensemble. Literature will be selected from many genres: everything from Vocal Jazz to Medieval motets. This 16-voice mixed group will perform at AHS Choir concerts, Solo/Ensemble contest, football games and more. Note: This course also meets outside of the school day.
BRASS CLASS (SYMPHONIC BAND BRASS) – Enter F710X and F7102
Length: 2 semesters / 1.0 AA credit

Prerequisite(s): Membership in the symphonic band is open to all students with previous band experience or by permission of the director.

This class is for beginning to intermediate students who play or would like to play a brass instrument including trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, or tuba. Beginning students may be admitted with director permission, and this is a non-auditioned group that will be combined at concerts with the Woodwind/Percussion class, or perform brass ensemble pieces. Students will be required to participate in 3 concerts a year at Aloha, and potentially the Solo and Ensemble festival on a Saturday each March. Open to all grade levels.
WOODWIND/PERCUSSION CLASS (SYMPHONIC BAND W/PERCUSSION) – F7101 & F7102

Students will be required to participate in 3 concerts a year at Aloha, and potentially the Solo and Ensemble festival on a Saturday each March. Open to all grade levels.
WIND ENSEMBLE – F7151 & F7152

Wind Ensemble is the advanced level instrumental ensemble for high school students. It is the top instrumental performing group and represents the school at district, regional and state band festivals. Wind Ensemble will provide students with a balanced comprehensive study of music, at a pace appropriate for healthy instrumental and artistic development. All members of the Wind Ensemble will be strongly encouraged to study privately. Attendance will be required at all rehearsals and performances unless excused by the director, as they will be used to assess student achievement. Students will also be required to perform as part of the pep band for some home basketball games. Students must provide a concert dress uniform as outlined in the band handbook. Note: This course also meets outside of the school day. Concurrent enrollment in a major ensemble (Concert Band, Symphonic Band, or Wind Ensemble) is required for students participating in the marching ensemble or jazz bands. This class is a year long commitment.

Jazz Band is designed to expand students’ musical horizons and immerse them in an original, American art form. Students will study and perform a variety of styles including rock, swing, funk, and others. Standard instrumentation will be used (saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drums, piano, guitar, and bass). The jazz band will perform at four evening concerts throughout the school year, and the band will travel to adjudicated festivals in the spring, usually on Saturdays. Attendance at these events is required. Jazz band meets before the school day every morning from 7:30-8:30am. This class is a year long commitment.
PIANO KEYBOARDING – F702X

Piano Keyboarding 1 is a beginning level class for new players that will teach students how to read, write, listen to and play keyboard music. Students will develop technical playing skills as well as explore the ability to improvise by ear. A gradual progression from very easy to early-intermediate exercises and literature of various styles will culminate in short performing assessments (both individually and as a group) and graded recording sessions. In addition to practicing and performing, students will explore the basics of music theory as it relates to what we’re learning. Students will practice individually on electronic keyboards with and without headphones. This class is geared very strongly towards people just starting to learn piano, rather than those already at an intermediate level.
MUSIC THEORY (DUAL CREDIT) – F6501 & F6502

Music Theory provides students with an understanding of the fundamentals of music and includes one or more of the following topics: composition, arrangement, analysis, aural development, and sight reading. Prepares students create their own arrangements and compositions in any style.
MUSIC PRODUCTION – F681X

Learn how to make beats, record live sound, edit music, produce, mix & master, and podcasting. All software and hardware is free & provided. The class is a combination of students doing specific skills-based assignments and also getting time to work on their own self-selected production projects.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC STUDIO – F770X

Learn to play guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and ukulele! No prior musical experience is necessary, and students with prior experience will have plenty of opportunities to grow. You will learn to play songs on every instrument, read tablature, play chords, name & identify notes, listen to music, and more! After trying out each instrument, students pick an instrument to focus on. Students self-select projects alone or in student-organized bands. There are no concerts or performances. All instruments are provided by the school, but students can bring in their own instruments as well. This class is repeatable for credit.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC STUDIO 2 – F7711 and F7712

This is a full-year, next-level class for students that want to dive deeper into guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and ukulele. Students must have already taken “Instrumental Music Studio” OR audition with Mr. Thompson. Students will dive deeper in their chosen instrument through fundamentals, music theory, and song writing. Students self-select projects alone or in student-organized bands. There are no concerts or performances outside class.
