CHOIR

TREBLE CHOIR – F6151 & F6152 

Cantilena

Cantilena is the main Treble AHS vocal ensemble, and is for students with advanced musical ability. This OSAA sanctioned choir competes in Metro League and State Choral competitions, and requires academic eligibility. This choir class will help you develop advanced vocal technique, literacy skills, and repertoire for treble ranges. Cantilena performs at Aloha High School concerts, area festivals, and community events year-round in a competitive and noncompetitive environment. This class is a year-long commitment. Note: this choir will occasionally meet outside of the regular school day.

MIXED CHOIR F6121 & F6122
Chorale

This is the entry level mixed ensemble for treble and bass clef ranges and voices.  This choir class focuses on music reading, performance and learning to sing in two and three part harmony. Students will learn music of various styles, including classical and modern pop and jazz and will perform at quarterly Aloha choral concerts. Note: this choir will occasionally meet outside of the regular school day.

CONCERT CHOIR – F6301 & F6302

Concert Choir is the advanced mixed AHS vocal ensemble, and is for students with advanced musical ability. This OSAA sanctioned choir competes in Metro League and State Choral competitions, and requires academic eligibility.  Students study and perform music literature of various style periods, and travel to competitions and festivals around the state. Vocal technique, literacy, musicianship and performance skills are further developed for treble and bass voices.

ADVANCED VOCAL ENSEMBLE – F6701 & F6702

New Day Singers

Length/Credit: 2 semesters / 1.0 AA credit

Grade(s): 10, 11, and12

Prerequisite: Concurrent enrolled in Concert Choir or Treble Choir & Audition in April.


New Day Singers is AHS Choir’s most advanced ensemble. Literature will be selected from many genres: everything from Vocal Jazz to Medieval motets. This 16-voice mixed group will perform at AHS Choir concerts, Solo/Ensemble contest, football games and more. Note: This course also meets outside of the school day.

BAND

CONCERT BAND – F7051 & F7052

Length: 2 semesters / 1.0 AA credit

Grade(s): 9, 10, 11 and 12

Prerequisite(s): Membership in Concert Band is open to all students with previous band experience in middle school or high school or by permission of the director.

Concert Band is required of all freshmen or first year band members. This ensemble provides students with a balanced comprehensive study of music, at a pace appropriate for the first year of high school band. The course will consist of mixed instrumental ensemble music and will include several concerts. Instruction will be designed so that students will connect, examine, imagine, define, try, extend, refine and integrate music study into other subject areas. Ensemble and solo activities will be designed to develop elements of musicianship. All band members are encouraged to study privately. Attendance will be required at all rehearsals and performances unless excused by the director, as they will be used to assess student performance achievement among other group and individual evaluation methods. Students will also be required to perform as part of the pep band for some home basketball games. Students must provide a concert dress uniform as outlined in the band handbook. Note: This course also meets outside of the school day for concerts. Concurrent enrollment in a major ensemble (Concert Band, Symphonic Band, or Wind Ensemble) is required to participate in extracurricular ensembles such as the marching ensemble and jazz bands. This class is a year long commitment.

SYMPHONIC BAND – F7101 & F7102

Length: 2 semesters / 1.0 AA credit

Grades: 10, 11 and 12

Prerequisite(s): Membership in the symphonic band is open to all students with previous band experience in grades 10 -12 or by permission of the director.

Wind Ensemble is the advanced level instrumental ensemble for high school students. It is the top instrumental performing group and represents the school at district, regional and state band festivals. Wind Ensemble will provide students with a balanced comprehensive study of music, at a pace appropriate for healthy instrumental and artistic development. All members of the Wind Ensemble will be strongly encouraged to study privately. Attendance will be required at all rehearsals and performances unless excused by the director, as they will be used to assess student achievement. Students will also be required to perform as part of the pep band for some home basketball games. Students must provide a concert dress uniform as outlined in the band handbook. Note: This course also meets outside of the school day. Concurrent enrollment in a major ensemble (Concert Band, Symphonic Band, or Wind Ensemble) is required for students participating in the marching ensemble or jazz bands. This class is a year long commitment.

JAZZ BAND – F7201 & F7202

Jazz Band is designed to expand students’ musical horizons and immerse them in an original, American art form. Students will study and perform a variety of styles including rock, swing, funk, and others. Standard instrumentation will be used (saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drums, piano, guitar, and bass). The jazz band will perform at four evening concerts throughout the school year, and the band will travel to adjudicated festivals in the spring, usually on Saturdays. Attendance at these events is required. Jazz band meets before the school day every morning from 7:30-8:30am. This class is a year long commitment.

PIANO

PIANO KEYBOARDING – F702X

Length: 1 semester/.5 AA credit

Piano Keyboarding 1 is a beginning level class for new players that will teach students how to read, write, listen to and play keyboard music. Students will develop technical playing skills as well as explore the ability to improvise by ear. A gradual progression from very easy to early-intermediate exercises and literature of various styles will culminate in short performing assessments (both individually and as a group) and graded recording sessions. In addition to practicing and performing, students will explore the basics of music theory as it relates to what we’re learning. Students will practice individually on electronic keyboards with and without headphones. This class is geared very strongly towards people just starting to learn piano, rather than those already at an intermediate level.

MUSIC THEORY AND PRODUCTION

MUSIC THEORY (DUAL CREDIT) – F6501 & F6502

Music Theory provides students with an understanding of the fundamentals of music and includes one or more of the following topics: composition, arrangement, analysis, aural development, and sight reading. Prepares students create their own arrangements and compositions in any style. 

MUSIC PRODUCTION – F681X

This is an introductory course for students to explore music production through hands-on, project-based learning.  Primary units of study include the creation of electronic music, music recording, sound boards, live music mixing, and podcasting.  Students will develop fundamental knowledge in these areas in a way that enables them to pursue further study and exploration of the various avenues of music production both in and beyond the school environment.

INSTRUMENAL MUSIC STUDIO

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC STUDIO F770X

This class will teach you the basics of playing electronic drum set, electric guitar, electric bass, and ukulele!  You will also experiment with music production and beat making.  No prior musical experience is necessary, and students with prior experience will have plenty of opportunities to grow.  You will learn to play songs on every instrument, read tablature, play chords, name & identify notes, listen to teacher-selected and student-selected music, and more!  While learning each instrument, you will choose a self-guided project oriented around music that you want to learn.  Because the instruments are electronic, almost all of what you play can only be heard by you so there’s no need to be nervous!  There are no concerts or performances.  All instruments are provided by the school, but students are welcome to bring in their own instruments as well.  Students are welcome to repeat this course as many times as they like.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC STUDIO 2 F7711 and F7712
Length: 2 semesters / 1.0 AA credit

Prerequisite(s): Instrumental Music Studio OR audition with Mr. Thompson in person on guitar, bass, drums, and/or ukulele

This is a next-level class for you to dive deeper into guitar, bass guitar, drum set, ukulele, and music production while making music together with your classmates!  ALL students in this class will play music with and for other students daily.  Students must have already taken “Instrumental Music Studio” OR audition with Mr. Thompson on  guitar, bass, drums, and/or ukulele.  Students will practice and extend fundamentals on every instrument, learn through listening to teacher-selected and student-selected music, and more.  Students are sorted into bands and learn & write songs together, as well as perform and/or record together.  There are no required concerts or performances outside class.  All instruments are provided by the school, but students are welcome to bring in their own instruments as well.  Students are welcome to repeat this course as many times as they like.  This course is transcripted as “Instrumental Music Studio 2.” (Contact andrew_thompson@beaverton.k12.or.us with questions.)
