YLA features introductory summer backpacking and canoe-camping courses in the North Cascades. While in the backcountry, high school students build connections with peers, practice leadership skills, learn about plants, animals & people in the North Cascades ecosystem, talk about climate change & climate solutions, and earn community service hours. This year, we are offering three sessions for trips, with each session composed of a 9-day canoe trip(July 5-13th, July 25th-August 2nd, and Aug 15-23rd). The program is intended to be introductory and students from all experience levels in the outdoors are encouraged to apply.
We offer need-based scholarships to participants (Around 84% of participants receive partial or full scholarships each year), provide gear for those who need it, and offer transportation from select locations to our Environmental Learning Center in North Cascades National Park. This summer we will be providing transportation from Skagit & Whatcom counties. By removing cost, gear and transportation barriers, we attempt to make our program more accessible. Please let us know if there are any other barriers to participation that we can address in our program and if you have any questions.
In the meantime, if you have any students that you think would be interested, encourage them to APPLY NOW online. Ideal candidates for this program are current 9th-12th grade students who are motivated to learn about and protect the environment, young emerging leaders, and students who have historically faced barriers to access to outdoor spaces and similar leadership courses (including people of color, students from low-income backgrounds, English language learners, LGBTQ+ students and more). Any and all interested students are encouraged to apply. Applications are open NOW and will close May 4th.
Community Program (ages 15-18): The Community Crew in WA is based out of both Tacoma and Olympia. This is a day program where participants must reside near the locations that programs are offered. Participants work Monday - Friday for 5 weeks and return home each night. The last week is spent camping at Mount Rainier which is a great way to culminate all of the teens’ learned skills in conservation and expose them to a National Park so close to home! Our local partners include Metro Parks Tacoma, Pierce County Parks, and Capitol Land Trust; all of which host conservation projects such as trail maintenance, invasive species removal, and habitat restoration for our crews to work on. Link to more info and application is here.
Dates: 6/26-7/28 or 7/31-9/1
Camping Program (ages 16-19): Participants travel throughout WA (or Idaho or Oregon) for the 4 or 5-week duration of the program working Monday - Friday on conservation projects. Participants eat, sleep, and work as a unit throughout the course of the program, where they gain valuable social, living, and work experience. Crews camp in the field for their entire session and typically travel to a new project site each week. Like the community program, crews work on similar environmental projects but with partners such as NPS, Forest Service, and State Parks in some of the PNW’s most beautiful areas! We also offer affinity crews here in WA such as our Rainbow Crew (LGBTQ+ only) and ASL Crews (Deaf/HoH only). Link to more info and application is here.
Dates: 6/24-7/22 or 7/29-9/2
