Art is often judged and valued by both the skill required to produce it and the creativity and concept of the idea behind it. This year the BHS art teachers wanted to recognize the work of BHS junior Mary Case.
Throughout the spring semester, the artwork Mary has done in "Digital Art and Photography 3" has excelled in both originality and craftsmanship. Each piece has stood out as a unique solution that breaks the mold and needs its own category. Her work this semester has been defined by her willingness to take risks, to explore the possibilities various materials offered, and to revise and refine her work until she achieved the results that she pursued.
We applaud Mary for her hard work and dedication to our core values of Skill, Quality, Cultural Awareness, and Creative Thinking. Congratulations Mary Case!
"The constellations that were placed over her body were both taken from the Greek myth Phaethon. The main purpose of this myth is to teach the importance of one's actions and how big a decision may be. This tells the story of Phaeton, Helios' son, who was never told no by his father. Phaethon asked to drive the chariot of the sun for a day. But because he did not know how to control it, he lost control and fell to the Earth. The river he landed in was called the Eridanus. The first constellation to the left is known as the chariot, specifically the chariot of the sun in the myth. The second constellation is named after the river from this story, Eridanus, it gained the name, "the path of souls". The story behind these constellations gives greater meaning to my mixed media piece."
"I learned a lot from this project. One main thing that I learned is how challenging it can be to pull together a shoot...but it also taught me how rewarding all the work can be. I also learned more about lighting in the studio and the ways you can manipulate the studio lights. With these photos, I was attempting to use a long shutter speed to create blur and motion, and this is what I was able to accomplish."
"This project had four main steps; creating a pattern, sewing together a tank top, taking photos in the studio, and then finally combining these photos into a website design... To create this pattern I used Adobe Illustrator. I used the pen tool to create all the circle shapes, and then after realizing I wanted to add more, I added the star shaped. Then this pattern was printed out onto fabric. I had to create a test sewing pattern and shirt, to see what I was able to make with the size fabric I had available. After these steps were complete I was able to sew everything together into a complete tank top. The next step was to go into the studio and take photos that I can use to show off the top I made. Editing was next, I used adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to edit the color and brightness of the photo, along with taking out any unwanted spots in the picture. Once the editing of the individual photos were complete I switched to designing the final project. I opened Adobe Indesign and found inspiration from real websites as to how I should design this. I created little icons and experimented with the photo sizes."
"The process to creating was a very long, but rewarding one. ...I took my sketch into Adobe Illustrator and starting making an outline. Then I had to decide what I wanted to do for the background behind the moth and on the other panels. I went through many different ideas...but in the end, I didn't want to take away from the Luna moth, so I went with stars and the night sky. I also included subtle clouds that connect between all the sides. Once this was all designed I was able to use the live paint tool. This allowed me to fill in all the shapes with color. So at this point I was now completely done with the design, and adobe illustrator. I then had help printing the different panels out on transparency paper. After testing different options I found the puffy paint that I would use to outline all the lines on the lamp. This gave the lamp texture like a stain glass lamp would have, and I think this is what really tied everything together. So after I spent many hours outlining with puffy paint I was finally able to assemble my lamp shade and connect it to its base. I used wire to create my own lamp harp and I used a wax paper and foam board to create a buffer to help diffuse the light from the bulb."
