I made my sculpture with the intent for it to be minimalist. I intended for this sculpture to be simple and easy to look at with an eye-catching coat of gold paint. The sculpture's basic shape was made with the idea of negative space in mind. The simplicity draws attention to free-flowing curves and the semi-rough surface - like a plant growing all which way without a care in the world. The texture and bumps hidden under a gold exterior symbolize the imperfections in us all but also that we can always shine even with these imperfections.
I decided to use symbols from the Korean culture in my vase since I am very interested in the culture, so I decided to use some words in Korean on the vase to go along with the pictures as well. I wanted to put some words in Korean on the vase along with the pictures, because I am currently learning the language and have an interest in learning more of the language. The two symbols that I used in the vase were a Lotus flower and a cherry blossom flower. The Lotus flower is a symbol of creation and birth and is associated with virtue. When looking for symbols for the vase I thought that the Lotus was really pretty and would look good on one of the sides on my vase. The other large symbol I used was a cherry blossom. This symbolizes purity and beauty in the Korean culture and in Korea there are even cherry blossom festivals when the trees blossom in the spring. These flowers look so pretty when they are in full bloom during the spring and I hope to see them in person in Korea some day. I added two words in Korean on either side of my vase. I wrote the word for flower in Korean on the Lotus side of the vase which would be pronounced as “kkot”. On the other side of the vase, with the cherry blossoms, I wrote the word for spring in Korean which would be pronounced as “bom”. Overall, the pot has positive symbols from the culture and popular ones that I have seen and it was interesting researching the meanings of the different symbols and flowers.
My pinch pot is inspired by leaf bugs, specifically the ones seen in animal crossing. I find the way they stand up quite cute and when I heard we were doing the pinch pots I wanted to create one. The back pitcher is a water cup to use on my ceramics projects and inside holds my paint brushes.
What do you first think of when you hear Yin Yang? Most people think of black and white or the symbol. I think of balance. The balance between lightness and darkness. When I first thought of this idea, I wanted to keep the whole piece in black and white with some grayscale in it. However, I was inspired by color and how some colors go together well. That’s how the blue and pink came into the piece as well. After designing and thinking of colors I wanted the final piece to have, I went to build the bowl. I started with a metal bowl wrapped in cling wrap to create the shape I wanted. Then I moved to work with clay, creating a slab base and then creating the coils. The base and coils were put inside the metal bowl to create that shape. Throughout the process, I wanted to keep the clay smooth, especially since the coils would start cracking so I would put water on my finger and smooth the surface. I scored and slipped all of the pieces I wanted to add and waited for it to dry. After that, I painted it, which was a pain due to all the nooks and cranes but after a bit of tedious work, it was finally finished. The bowl is by no means perfect, but I think it turned out the best it could.
This Rooster is my Chinese Zodiac animal. I made this sculpture to represent my animal sign. The year that I was born, was the year of the Wood Rooster. I believe I convey most of the personality traits for this year.
My culture pot features symbols from the Orlanthi runes. Coils of clay were scored and slipped together and then smoothed. I used these symbols to create a story. The first five symbols show chaos, beast, dragon, fire, and heat. This shows how a dragon is lighting things on fire and bringing chaos to the town. There was so much fire that it was very hot in this village. The next two symbols exemplify man and motion. These two show how the people of the village reacted to the dragon. They were running from the dragon and burnt from the fire around them. The next three symbols are moon, shadow, and cold. This shows how large the dragon was, the beast was so large that it covered the entire moon’s light and left a large shadow on the ground. The symbol of cold stands for how fast these people were running. The next three symbols were fate, illusion, and hunger. These three symbols show how a cruel-less fate is an illusion and how these days that the people were going hungry which led up to the dragon coming up to their village. The last four symbols are magic, luck, dragon, and death. These show how magic and luck helped the villagers kill the dragon. I chose this story because I believe that you need to have struggles in your life and to be brave to show your strength.
This artwork represents my strong belief in our country and our military men and women who sacrifice their lives to protect our freedoms as Americans. These soldiers do so much for our red white and blue and ask for nothing in return, they are the real MVPs. I chose to depict the US air force in this artwork because my grandpa served in the air force and one day I dream of serving my country there as well.
Before sketching my ideas for this project, I looked through some museums with coil pots for inspiration. After looking at the sketches I drew, I decided to combine my favorite elements of each. I used the regular straight coils to build the main base and shape of the pot. In between, I used spheres and spirals to create more form and design. Then I added braided coils on top to add a more interesting look. I also wanted to make something that had a simple color palette and a more elaborate design, so I decided to paint with only 3 main colors. Overall I spent a lot of time with the design of this pot and it is definitely one of my favorite art pieces I've made.
My vase features the Navajo Native American culture. I applied two symbols that represent rain; the vertical hashes near the top of the vase and the diamond made up of two triangles. The Navajo believed that rain was one of the four main elements of earth and taught that the rain needed to be respected, otherwise the sacred forces will punish a person who is negative in times of rain. Near the top of the vase I added a symbol that looks like stairs. This is the cloud ladder, and to the Navajo, the cloud ladder is where the gods walk among the heavens. On one side I added a symbol that looks like a large, “n,” shape and small, “u,” shape within it. This is the mouth of the Talking God. The Talking God is important to the Navajo people as he is the one deity who is compassionate and an advocate for mankind. I added two stair-like triangles near the bottom that represent mountains. The Navajo had four mountains that represent their major beliefs, allowing them to live in harmony with nature. This vase shows some of the things that were important to the Navajo people.
On my vase I chose symbolize the Puerto Rican culture. This was important to me because I’m proud of my culture and some of my family members moved here from Puerto Rico. My grandpa, grandma, my 2 aunts, uncle and my dad were the ones who moved to the United States. I showcased the flag of Puerto Rico on my vase. I also painted the red and white stripes on the vase to complete the whole design of the flag.
My culture pot is about the Czech & Slovakian culture. The former centralist state Czechoslovakia was divided into two separate states. These are now called the Czech Republic and Slovakia. They were divided by the Constitutional Law of the Federation of 28 October 1968. This happened on January 1st, 1969. This symbol is known as the Coat of Arms. It showcases the primary colors red, blue and yellow. The blue represents a hill. The yellow represents wisdom, generosity, and openness of the cognitive process. The red represents the blood and death experienced during Magyarization.
My culture pot theme is French. My focal point, on the front and back, is a red heart with an anchor through it. The background color for the inside and outside of my pot is blue. The crossed heart anchor symbol means faith, hope, and love. The heart represents humanity, the anchor represents the cross because this symbol represents faith in Christianity. There are three key Christian virtues which are faith, hope and charity and are shown in my culture vase. This is represents the French culture as well because this symbol can be found in the south of France, by the Mediterranean Sea. It is the emblem of the Saints Maries de la Mer, the capital of the Camargue region.
The culture pot that I built symbolizes the Native American Culture. I built this vase by creating individual coils that I stacked on top of each other, carefully slipped and scored together. Then I smoothed the inside and out. When putting the symbols on my pot I made sure the carved design spots were very smooth, with no crumbs. The symbol of the half moon represents the protector and guardian of earth. The second symbol on my pot, above the moon, is a sun representing life-giving abundance with its warmth radiating healing and peace. In Native American culture the color white represents the Southern Mountains and they believed that the White Mountains signified mornings. The color black represents the Northern Mountains and they believed that black signified the night. I decided to paint the whole vase black taking a very small paint brush to get right next to the sun and moon. For the sun and moon I went with the color white and used a small brush to paint the details in the sun and moon. I picked these two colors for a minimalistic look to the pot. This pot showcases symbols and colors of the Native American culture.
The culture pot that I have created represents the fusion of the past and present of Polish pottery. The form and middle grey band are modeled after some of the earliest pieces of pottery that archaeologists have discovered in the area. The white sections are designed to resemble the most popular pottery company in the country. I believe that in order for society to progress, we need to look at the past and present to determine our direction, that was my purpose to convey in this pot. Additionally the flowers all have different meanings in Poland and display what values I wish to carry into my future. Tulips are highly prized and only to be given to important people in one's life. I chose these flowers to remind myself of who the important people are in my life and to keep them close. The red of the tulips represents strength and resilience, this choice was made because my support system is everything to me, it is so strong that I wanted to exemplify them within my creation. Gerbera daisies also hold special meaning in Polish society. These bright and colorful cousins to the daisies, are used to represent joy and playfulness. I decided to include this flower because I don’t believe in taking life too seriously. There are going to be times where life gets hard and difficult and to help me through these moments I just remember to take it easy. In the grand scheme it is more important that you had fun instead of just working hard.
