Teaching Weaving to Veterans

Members from several guilds in the St. Louis region teach basket weaving at an annual event at the Jefferson Barracks Veterans Administration. A different basket is taught every year to veterans with spinal cord injuries or PTSD as part of their Occupational Therapy. It's been an annual event since 2012 except during the COVID pandemic. Some veterans are reluctant at the beginning of class but all of them leave with a smile on their face with their finished baskets. The class is taught on the Friday before Veterans Day and all the supplies are donated by members and the Southside Weavers Guild. Wendy Reary, of St. Louis Basketry Supply is always generous with pattern suggestions and discounts of supplies.
