All students participate in YES orientation on their first day. Mrs. Chester and Mrs. Brantley go over the YES handbook as well as the class expectations. They introduce the YES staff as well as showcase the enrichment options.
Academic: Every class is usually full of excitement and engagement from students and myself. We are always excited to see each other and share our day, good or bad. In Academics, we come in focused and ready to complete assignments. The students share their screens and assist one another with their assignments. We even have occasional Zoom sessions that are specifically set aside for peer tutoring. We have a phenomenal academic group and the support amongst everyone is unmatched.
Enrichment: We discuss total self care, mental, physical, social and emotional aspects of each student. We talk about our feelings/thoughts, interactions with others, physical features, and much more. We provide advice and support for each other, as well as encourage each other if we are struggling in some areas. We will soon be putting pen to paper and JOURNALING! We are super excited about taking this self-care journey together.
In our academic class, students collaborate and receive help with homework. Students have received homework help with argumentative writing, citing textual evidence, formal and informal language, active and passive voice verbs, digital ISN assignments, and Georgia’s geography and history. In addition, students receive tutoring, participate in educational games such as Kahoot and Quizizz, and they are taught test-taking strategies to prepare for tests.
In the Book Club, we are reading and discussing The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
During the academic session students are engaged in several different assignments such as Math, Science, Social Studies, ELA, and academic enrichment. They often share their screens to receive assistance. We also engage in academic enrichment via Usatestprep, IXL, Kahoot, Quizizz, and Jeopardy.
While mixing it up in the kitchen during enrichment students produced delicious treats such as Rice Krispies. Students learn about safety and sanitation. Cooking with kids is not just about ingredients, recipes, and cooking. It’s about harnessing imagination, empowerment, and creativity. Cooking is like painting or writing a song. Just as there are only so many notes or colors, there are only so many flavors and how you combine them is what sets you apart.

In Academics the students are very willing to work with one another in our sessions. I have a mixed grade level of students with some being 6th graders and others being 7th graders. It is great to see the two age groups so willing to help each other. Students are sharing their screens while we are in our zoom sessions to more easily help each other with their assignments. We also engage in educational games such as quizizz and kahoots.
