Celebrate Black History all February with ACC's 2026 A Century of Black History Commemorations.  Check out the line up of campus conversations, art exhibits, and social events happening in-person at a variety of campuses with hybrid options available.

Reminder: While Wendy is out of office, Department Chair duties will be covered by Theo Yurevitch, Sarah Stayton, and Chris Gardner.  Wendy will be back to Department Chairing on February 16.  

• Theo will be helping with student schedule changes, student reinstatements, student retroactive withdrawals, and faculty absences.  

• Sarah will be handling student complaints and coordinating with INRW. 

• Chris will be holding down the newsletter and answering general student questions about the CLS Department. 

• Grade Changes will be processed when Wendy is back on February 16.

This form is created and maintained by the Assistant Department Chair for CLS's Evaluation Committee (Beth Frye).  Use this form to submit syllabi, Faculty Reflection Forms, and self-reported mandatory training for Fall 2025, Spring 2026, and Summer 2026. 

Submit Syllabi by the second week of classes (varies by session; Jan 30, 2026 for 16 week)

Plus, you can find instructions for badge requests and grade changes.  The easiest way to navigate the CLS Faculty Handbook is the search field.  Look for the magnifying glass 🔍in the upper right corner of the homepage and type your keyword (badge request or change eligibility).

Attendance Certification

Please pay attention to Attendance Certification deadlines.  You will receive an email reminding you that it is time to certify attendance for each section you teach. All instructions you need will be in the email.  A few basics and resources: 

• Certify Attendance through the MyACC Faculty app.  

• Make sure you understand what counts as "attendance" (a student does not need to be present in a face-to-face class in order to meet the requirements for attendance.  See question 3 on the Attendance Certification Q & A.)

• Remember: if you do not certify a student's attendance, they will be dropped from the course and it may affect their financial aid.  

Upcoming Dates: 

• 16 week sessions: Certify Attendance by February 4 (that's tomorrow!)

• 14 week sessions: Certify Attendance by February 13

Apply: Multi-Semester Term Appointments , Feb 9 - Feb 20

Applications for Multi-Semester Term Appointments (MSTA) in English will open February 9 in the eStaffing.  If you're an adjunct interested in MSTA or you received your MSTA status within the last three years, be sure to submit your application by February 20.  

What is MSTA? 

According to A.R. 4.0401.02  "A Multiple Semester Term Appointment (MSTA) is an appointment held by selected Adjunct Faculty that allows for priority status in the assignment of sections over multiple semesters. It is accepted operational standard of the College, as presented in Board Policy D-6 [4 b], to 'make extensive use of multiple-semester appointments for adjunct faculty.'"

Where do I apply?

On February 9, you will be able to access the application in eStaffing.  Find "MSTA Application" in menu and follow the prompts.  Submit before February 20.

Register NOW: 2026 CLS Curriculum Conference (CCC)

PDRS would like to invite you to this year’s CCC on Friday, March 6th from 11am - 4pm on ACC's Highland Campus. CLS Bylaws, Review and Comment by Feb. 27!

In an attempt to make the policies and procedures of the CLS Department transparent and protect CLS faculty, the CLS Bylaws Committee worked throughout fall 25 to compile the CLS Bylaws Draft.  The Bylaws committee welcomes your feedback and questions; please submit comments to the CLS Bylaw Review and Comment Google Form by Friday, February 27.  

Timeline for CLS Bylaws Review and Department Vote

February 27 - Deadline for all CLS faculty to submit comments.  ALL = full-time, adjunct, voting, or non-voting.  Get in there and tell us what you think!

March TBD - CLS Virtual Town Hall.  The Bylaws committee will address comments from the review and take questions.  

April - CLS Bylaws committee will implement changes based on comments from the Google Form and the CLS Town Hall. 

May 8 - CLS Department votes on the Bylaws!

Please Complete: CLS Diversity, Censorship, and Academic Freedom Survey, Deadline Mar. 31

The Professional Development and Research Comittee would appreciate your taking the time to fill out the CLS Diversity, Censorship, and Academic Freedom survey by Tuesday, March 31st. 

The survey is intended to gather information related to the teaching of diverse texts within CLS, as well as information about CLS instructors’ thoughts and experiences related to censorship and academic freedom. More specifically, we are gathering information about a few different things:

1. the texts that CLS instructors teach;

2. CLS instructors' experiences of—and attitudes toward—teaching diverse texts in the different programs and environments in which we teach (for example, ACC campuses and ISDs);

3. CLS instructors' strategies for responding to issues of censorship and pushback;

4. CLS instructors' thoughts, attitudes, and experiences with respect to academic freedom and viewpoint diversity.

The anonymous survey will be used to create a big-picture sense of where we are as a department by answering questions like: What values do CLS faculty use when selecting texts?  To what extent are we teaching texts in which our diverse population of students can see their experiences reflected?  To what extent do we—CLS faculty—feel able to teach the texts that we most want to teach and to explore topics and questions important to us and to our students in an atmosphere of academic and intellectual freedom?

College Reading and Learning Association Annual Conference, Oct 2026

CRLA is a great place to share and learn best practices in co-requisite design, reading strategies, and composition with an emphasis on finding new ways to support students. Join Walking Shadow Shakespeare Project for a night of Short Plays inspired by Shakespeare and created by local Austin artists, including Amber Luttig-Buonodono (writing under a pen name). Shows run at Trinity Street Playhouse at 7:30 pm March 3-7, with a matinee at 2pm on Saturday March 7. Tickets and more details here.

We will also be hosting a special champagne closing event on Sunday March 8 at 4pm at Sekrit Theater with a talkback and party to follow. You can find tickets for that here.

Unlike voting, you can actually submit to this form early and often.  Add some love notes now, come back in a month with pictures, and submit again after winter break when you've caught up on some leisure reading!
