Did you make a Blackboard Ultra conversion plan, yet? We know that the nagging is stressful, but we really want the process to go as smoothly as possible for you! Remember that your Summer 25 courses will have to be ready for Blackboard Ultra, and ACC resources may be limited during the May intersession. See the Blackboard Ultra item below for a variety of training options happening throughout the spring semester. (From Wendy: Anyone who takes the training and lets me know about it will get a personalized HUZZAH!!!)
Between February 27 and March 30, many of our colleagues and students will be observing Ramadan. Please spread the word about the Ramadan Prayer Space Initiative from the Office for Belonging and Purpose (see below for full details).
And, it's Black History Month for the rest of the week! Celebrate with TLED's Cultural Mosaic: A Celebration of Black History. During this final week you can join a Kahoot Trivia session or the Closing Celebration on Friday. This year the Celebration focuses on African Americans and Labor and includes a virtual display through the ACC libraries.

The Faculty Handbook can answer many questions about CLS policy, staffing, evaluation, and more! Plus, you can find instructions for badge requests and grade changes. The easiest way to navigate the CLS Faculty Handbook is the search field. C. PRUDENCE ARCENEAUX, a native Texan, is a poet who teaches English and Creative Writing at Austin Community College, in Austin, TX. Her work has appeared in various journals, including The Academy of American Poets’ Poem-A-Day, Limestone, New Texas, Hazmat Review, Texas Observer, Whiskey Island Magazine, African Voices and Inkwell. She is the author of two chapbooks of poetry—DIRT (awarded the 2018 Jean Pedrick Prize) and LIBERTY.

We've gathered all of the resources and policies regarding ACC's response to federal executive orders in this document: Info on Federal Executive Orders about Immigration. Below is a condensed version of ACC's official response. If you work in high schools, be sure to check the document for the policies at your specific high school.
Steps from ACC Chancellor:
If immigration officers come into your workspace (office or classroom), stay where you are, assure them you will comply.
Ask them to wait where they are while you connect them with the appropriate help.
Then, immediately contact the Chancellor’s office at 512-223-7598.
The district will be prepared to work with immigration officers directly.
Please continue your work as usual while we deploy our protocols. Our ACC Police will join the immigration officers to notify you of the appropriate next steps.
The Chancellor's email also reminded the ACC community about support available through Employee Assistance Program or the Office of the Ombudsperson.
South by Southwest 2025 will be happening at venues around Austin during the week of March 7 - March 15. In the past, this event has occurred during ACC's spring break and has had minimal effect on our students or classes. Please consider flexibility with students who may have more rigid work schedules or traffic challenges during SXSW.
I am so excited to jump the gun on this one--just a bit. Keep an eye for a new, homegrown initiative that CLS will be piloting. A good part of the project involves these General Education Competencies:
Personal Responsibility: Identify and apply ethical principles and practices to decision-making by connecting choices, actions and consequences.
Social Responsibility (Civic and Cultural Awareness): Analyze differences and commonalities among peoples, ideas, aesthetic traditions, and cultural practices to include intercultural competence, knowledge of civic responsibility, and the ability to engage effectively in regional, national, and global communities.
Alright--that's all I can say for now. But, in the spirit of preparation, I want to share one of my all time favorite RadioLab podcasts: Episode 1, Season 3, More Perfect, that speaks to "the poetic dream behind the First Amendment."

Submit your Syllabi for Spring 2025 to the Academic Year 2024-25 Collection by two weeks after the beginning of your courses.
Check the CLS Due List to see if you are in a Portfolio Year for Spring 25. Remember Portfolios are now due May 30 2025.

Complete your Administrative Duties (Syllabi and Office hours on Lighthouse!) no later than two weeks after the beginning of your courses.
If you have questions or want amazingly detailed guidance for each of the required tasks, check out or print Faculty Evaluation Guidelines, Spring 2025, created by Beth Frye, our (AMAZING!!!) CLS Evaluation Committee Chair.
Please remember to certify attendance for all of your class sections. This process is quick, painless, and really important to our students and ACC. (Plus, they'll come find you if you miss this deadline!)
You will receive an email from the Registrar/Glynis Miller titled "Class roster student attendance certification" with these instructions:
Student attendance certification is submitted using the MyACC / Course Management / Attendance Certification system.
From the main ACC web page, go to Faculty & Staff and choose MyACC
Find the Course Management heading, and then click Attendance Certification
Select the desired Term and Course
Once in the course, find the View box options, and select the Certify Attendance Roster.
All entries in the drop-down field default to an initial entry of 'Attended' to begin with. Faculty will then change the entry using the drop-down field to 'Never Attended', as needed. A selection must be made for each student.
Hit 'Submit' at the upper right corner of the roster to have your certifications recorded.

Our division (Liberal Arts: Humanities and Communications) has a new, super-suave Travel Request Form. (Shout out to Toño Ramirez and Jean Lauer!) If you would like to request permission and $$$ for a conference, you start with the form. (This is AWESOME because it means it can't get lost temporarily delayed in my emails!)

Upon completion, chair will automatically receive notification and be prompted to indicate approval with this form
Important: If you opt for ZTC/OER, we still need you to complete the Textbook Selection process outlined below so that we can tag and label your class on the Online Schedule.
Full-time and Adjunct INRW - Sue sent an email asking for textbooks orders; please be sure to respond. (We're working on a Google Form for future semesters!)
Full-time English faculty - should have entered their textbooks or ZTC/OER selections on the Summer 25 Sign-Off spreadsheet (you can find the link to that spreadsheet in the Summer 25 Staffing Sign Off email). Make sure you tell us if you want First Day Access!
Adjunct English Faculty will use the Textbook Selections: Summer 25 form. Once you've accepted your summer assignments in eStaffing (Feb 20 for Phase 2 adjuncts), please use the drop-down options in the Google Form to choose the textbook or ZTC/OER. You only need to select texts for courses that you are scheduled to teach; ignore the other courses.
Moving forward, ACC and CLS want faculty to aim for a BB Accessibility score of 80% or higher.

Please check your BB accessibility score at the beginning of the spring 2025 semester and as you add new items to your courses throughout the semester. Dean Toño Ramirez made this brief, helpful video to demo Accessibility Reports. If you need help fixing the accessibility of your Blackboard courses, you have resources!

At the CLS Curriculum Conference (CCC) (register now!), CLS will have three Instructional Designers on hand to help with ADA Compliance for PDFs.

If you are teaching summer, make a plan NOW for the Blackboard Ultra Conversion! Many of us wait until the last minute, but that is not the best option with this conversion. There will be growing pains during the process, and ACC may not have the resources to meet all the last-minute demand for trouble-shooting during the May intersession. Your best bet is to schedule yourself for one of the many training opportunities happening now and through the end of the spring semester. Your summer courses will be available on BB starting March 10.
Here are four different ways to get prepared:
(1) AVC Beth Knight sent an email to all faculty teaching summer courses. It included the following training options (each session offers four PD hours):

We need your help!
The Vertical Alignment Team is hosting its third annual Symposium (previously called "content exchange") in early June. We would like your feedback to create an event that is meaningful for YOU so please take a moment to complete this form - there are only SIX questions! This event is relevant for ALL faculty, especially those teaching dual credit, composition, and INRW.
The Vertical Alignment Team focuses on collaboration between college and high school faculty to improve student outcomes. Should you have any questions about the symposium or the group, contact Kari Conness or Brian Fonken.
The Student Research Symposium will take place on April 18, and we are accepting submissions through February 28, 2025. Please submit (with student permission) or encourage your students to submit their best research projects via the LAG website and its online form. We will consider any work that can be turned into a poster, presented on a laptop, or read aloud.

Amy Rostvold wants to share an opportunity to apply to Austin Academic Collaborative (soon-to-be Arts and Academic Collaborative), which offers a la carte education to homeschooled students. They currently need instructors to teach academic writing to middle school students (age 11-13). These classes focus on essay writing and research skills, and the ideal candidate would need to understand how to make learning fun and engage 11-13 year olds. The class meets twice per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) for an hour and fifteen minutes. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, contact Amy Rostvold.

From the Office of Belonging and Purpose
In alignment with our mission to support student success, we encourage faculty, instructional staff, and student support teams to help spread awareness about designated spaces available for Muslim students observing Ramadan. From February 27 to March 30, ACC Libraries will offer temporary spaces for students and employees who need a quiet place for prayer or wellness breaks. These spaces will be available on a first-come, first-served basis by contacting the reference desk at each library. Students should bring, use, and retain their personal items for these breaks.
Additionally, the College's El Centro Cultural Center, African American Cultural Center, and Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Center will provide overflow spaces on select dates during Ramadan. Students seeking more details may contact the respective Cultural Center.
Admissions and Enrollment designed an internal Google site to support ACC faculty. It has all the information that instructors need about attendance certification, grade submission, withdrawal, reinstating students, etc. The information is streamlined and very easy to navigate. Our club partners with library services and allows club members to pick up their free book copy (while supplies last) at any ACC library.
