Department of Composition & Literary Studies
Dr. Wendy Elle: wendy.elle@austincc.edu
We're rolling into March at the end of this week even though it already feels like spring (summer?) outside. Spring Break is right around the corner, which means it's a great time to check student progress and send out Inspire Academic Alerts. And while you're at it, encourage your students to share their work by applying to the Research Symposium (deadline March 1) and Innovate Literary Contest (deadline March 3).
I hope you're all ready for our first CLS Curriculum Conference on Friday! Remember you can attend on Zoom even if you missed the registration deadline (details and Zoom links below).
(P.S. We have English Majors tee shirts now...and some CLS swag coming...cannot wait to show everyone on MAJOR DAY!)

Hello, full-time and adjunct faculty! Please help the adjunct faculty hiring/onboarding committee improve orientation, onboarding, and mentoring for new adjuncts by completing our survey by Thursday, February 29. Even if you weren't recently hired, you were at some point new or have worked with new faculty and have valuable information to share.
This survey is anonymous. The committee thanks you in advance for taking a few minutes to provide the benefit of your expertise.

Major Day - March 20, 2024
On Wednesday, Mar 20, 2024 The Student Affairs team will hold a student-facing event called Major Day, at which we’re going to represent the CLS crew and the English Major as part of our ongoing effort to Revitalize the English Major. Your RTM team would love your energy and support in this effort, which translates to “please come hang out and show students how cool we CLS people are!”
We’ll need table coverage for the event, which runs from 10-2 at the Highland Campus. Any time you can come spend with us will be both greatly appreciated and almost certainly a good time. Here’s a link to the calendar event so that you can let us know if you’re able to come spend some time with us:
Close the Book, You’re Done! - May 3, 2024
On May 3, 2024, we’ll hold our first graduate reception for our English graduates. The event, called Close The Book, You’re Done! takes place from 2-4pm. We’ll have refreshments and photo opportunities and general revelry in celebration and gratitude for the students who have chosen to spend their time with us and earn their English degrees. The more of us there are at this event, the better!
Here’s the calendar event so that we can see who is able to come celebrate with us:
Close the Book, You’re Done! Graduation Reception
If you’re able to spend some time at either of these events, please let us know which day and what time we can slot you in.
The RTM crew and I thank you for your support!
Cheers!

We need to tag artifacts in Blackboard for the yearly assessment of general education competencies. This year the focus is on Visual Communication, Social Responsibility, and Teamwork. If you are teaching a Core Curriculum course, please tag at least one relevant assignment from each of your courses. Here's written and video instructions for tagging assignments in Blackboard.
Ron Johns, Associate Dean of Assessment and Evaluation, put an emphasis on the Social Responsibility competency, and notes that "assignments for Social Responsibility should, at a minimum involve:
demonstrating a knowledge of different cultures and/or perspectives
analyzing or comparing commonalities and differences between these cultures or perspectives"
ACC is hosting a Data Summit on March 27 from 10am-2pm at the HEB Center. (Campuses will be closed from 8am-4pm) Full-time faculty are required to attend. Adjunct faculty are encouraged to attend. See the flyer below.
