Session 1A, Panel on AI: Susan Meigs, Chris Berni, Dr. Carla Coleman & Dr. Dania Dwyer w/ Dr. Wendy Elle as moderator
This presentation will showcase the experiences of students engaged in a collaborative research assignment incorporating AI technology within a composition course. The assignment focused on addressing contemporary societal issues within the local community, fostering critical thinking, ethical inquiry, and collaborative research practices.
Session 1B, Presentation on Critical Reading & Flash Fiction: David Rice
Help students become better readers and writers with deconstruction of flash fiction. This session demonstrates using a one-page story with the goal of applying critical reading skills to longer texts.
Session 2A, Panel on Engagement: Dylan Walsh, Anja Brand, & Megan Wallace w/ Kari Conness as moderator
The Panel on Engagement will offer a smorgasbord of ideas to develop student agency in their learning and coursework. We'll discuss exploring universals of human experience in British Literature I, hands-on techniques for inspiring and scaffolding critical thinking, and we’ll have a workshop to investigate instructor assumptions about how long our assignments take students.
Session 2B, Panel on Grading: Chris Gardner, Dr. Lindsay Lawley Rerecich, & Colin Shanafelt w/ Luanne Preston as moderator
This panel will discuss grading methods and methodologies including building custom rubrics and then editable comment banks, labor-based grading, and specific, technology-assisted grading methods.
Session 3A, Workshop on Instructional Design: Katie McClendon
Join a lively student-centered workshop on instructional design. Explore simple, real-world strategies to boost engagement. No jargon, just practical tips to lessen student confusion.
Session 3B, "Two For the Price of One” (Actual Student Quote): The Benefits of Embedded Tutoring in an Asynchronous LAG 1302 Course: Dr. Brinda Roy & Catherine C. Wadbrook
Our presentation is on the role of embedded tutoring in ensuring student success in an asynchronous English 1302 LAG course. We'll discuss challenges and the impact we’ve had; go over wise practices to ensure an effective collaboration between instructor, tutor, and student; and we’ll look at how what we’re doing builds community not just within the classroom but also beyond it.
