ACCENT Student Media is looking for students interested in journalism to fill student leadership positions (available at the end of spring 24).
From Nathan Spear, current Editor in Chief:
In these recent semesters, ACCENT -- which has been an active part of ACC since 1997 -- released a newsletter, several episodes of a new podcast, and made a return to printing with our recent debut of ACCENT Magazine. Now, with several of our organization's officers graduating in May, we are hoping that new student leaders will be able to carry on these projects. Speaking from experience, the position can be a great opportunity for students to experience working with a news team and as a member of the press with more access to events and interviews for stories that interest them.
Please share this opportunity with your students and have interested students complete this Google Form (the information session has passed, but students can still get involved).

Have you taught a hybrid classes recently? Are you scheduled to teach one in an upcoming semester? Well, CLS wants your input! We're thinking about making a video that explains the expectations and realities of hybrid classes for students. Our goal is to create something that faculty could share with their students at the beginning of hybrid classes.
Please complete this quick Google Form: Hybrid Classes Expectation Video Interest Form. It's four multiple-choice questions to gauge faculty interest in 1) having that video and 2) participating in the creation of that video.
If you have any questions, contact Anja Ketcham.

ACC students are being targeted in a phishing scam. Students have received emails that offer job or internship opportunities and then ask for student's financial information. More problematically, these emails are designed to gain students' trust by using faculty names and ACC department titles. Please warn your students about these phishing scams!
Students can see an example email and get guidance on reporting scams here: ACC News: Job Scams Target College Students.

From Shasta Buchanan, VC of Students Affairs:
Dear Colleagues,
ACC wants to inform you about a new requirement from the Texas Legislature regarding how we support student parents. To ensure compliance in supporting our parenting students, Academic and Student Affairs are working together with the Office of Institutional Research and Analytics (OIRA) to identify all students who are parents or legal guardians of children under the age of 18.
About the Legislation
The 88th Texas Legislature passed legislation providing amended provisions of the Texas Education Code, which includes the following for eligible parenting students:
Section 51.9357: Designation of Liaison Officer to Assist Student Parents
Section 51.982: Protections for Pregnant and Parenting Students
Section 51.983: Early Registration for Parenting Students
As an institution, we want to ensure that ACC provides information and assistance regarding various support services and resources available to parenting students. These include, but are not limited to:
Medical and behavioral health coverage and services
Basic needs supports
Public benefit programs related to food security, affordable housing, and housing subsidies
Parenting and childcare resources
Employment assistance
Transportation assistance
Student academic success strategies
The earliest registration period
Our offices and departments have been diligent in providing all students with resources and support services, and we will continue to do so while ensuring that our parenting students are well-informed about all the benefits they are entitled to under state law.
How can you help our students?
Later this afternoon, students will receive a notification requesting them to complete the short questionnaire. This questionnaire will help us gain a better understanding of student needs and enable them to access additional benefits. We kindly ask for your assistance in encouraging all students to complete the questionnaire to ensure that they receive the necessary support. Students can find the Parents Student Status form link on their MyACC profile for easy access, or via the link below.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to our student-parent liaisons with the Student Advocacy Center at sac-group@austincc.edu.
Thank you for your partnership in helping us better serve and meet our students’ basic needs.

We need to tag artifacts in Blackboard for the yearly assessment of general education competencies. This year the focus is on Visual Communication, Social Responsibility, and Teamwork. If you are teaching a Core Curriculum course, please tag at least one relevant assignment from each of your courses. Here's written and video instructions for tagging assignments in Blackboard.
Ron Johns, Associate Dean of Assessment and Evaluation, put an emphasis on the Social Responsibility competency, and notes that "assignments for Social Responsibility should, at a minimum involve:
demonstrating a knowledge of different cultures and/or perspectives
analyzing or comparing commonalities and differences between these cultures or perspectives"
