Classroom

Class Rosters

Faculty can access class rosters on their myACC app: https://myacc.apps.austincc.edu/faculty/.

Do not let a student who is not on the roll attend class. Only assistant deans can add students to a class that is full or after registration is over. Faculty do not have the authority to add students to their classes. Rosters should be checked several times during the semester.

Credit by Exam & Non-Institutional Credit

Some students may take a test to place out of English courses. This is called Credit by Examination. Students can earn up to 30 credits through non-institutional credit-by-exam programs such as AP, CLEP and up to 24 credits for IB. They can also take a course challenge exam, which the CLS Department administers.

Faculty Handbook Sheets

Master Syllabus (ACC) - College Policies

ACC faculty may choose to distribute the following college policies as a separate handout from the rest of their course syllabus. Many instructors have adopted changes that would be under the course-specific section of the syllabus and not included here.

Attendance (Certification)

Faculty must certify attendance on the class roll in Online Services by the 12th class day

Certify Attendance: https://rosters.apps.austincc.edu/

It is wise but not mandatory to keep records of students’ attendance other than for certified attendance. Go to MyACC and select either Class Rosters or Attendance Certification (They both link to class rosters.) Click on the class you need to certify. From the dropdown menu labeled "View," select "Certify Attendance." Faculty are required to enter the last date of attendance for each student on the final grade roster for whom a grade of 'F' is being awarded. If students are on the final roll, instructors must issue them a grade. Students marked as not attending on the 12th day will be withdrawn from class by Admissions.

Withdrawals

NOTE: Per state law, students enrolling for the first time in fall 2007 or later at any Texas college or university may not withdraw (receive a W) from more than six courses during their undergraduate college career. Some exceptions for good cause could allow a student to withdraw from a course without having it count toward this limit. If a student has reached their sixth drop they are no longer able to withdraw or be withdrawn by the instructor. Students are encouraged to carefully select courses and contact an advisor or counselor for assistance: http://www.austincc.edu/support-and-services/services-for-students/areas-of-study-advising

It may be useful to review the state policy with students at the beginning of the semester.

Also, be aware that international students on F-1 visas must maintain a 12-hour course load. Withdrawing an international student may cause them to lose their eligibility.

Withdrawing students who receive financial aid may cause financial difficulties for the student as well.

Instructors can withdraw students from their classes by visiting MyACC - Faculty and selecting "Instructor Initiated Withdrawal." Click on the appropriate class. From the dropdown menu labeled "View," select "Instructor Initiated Withdrawal.

Students may be given a retroactive withdrawal after the College withdrawal deadline by contacting the registrar at HBC. Instructors will provide the registrar with the student’s ID, course section, and justification for the retroactive withdrawal.

CLS Position on Withdrawals

When possible, the department commits to retaining students who are making academic progress while struggling with factors beyond their control. We encourage faculty to meet with students to review progress, prior to assigning a grade of “W.” Withdrawals for lack of prerequisite should occur in the first two weeks of the semester.  We encourage faculty to fill out an Inspire report prior to withdrawing a student for missed classes, low grades, or lack of progress and to use withdrawals sparingly so students have every opportunity to succeed.

Retaken Classes & GPA

Students who score a final grade of “F” in a class at ACC may retake the same class at ACC and the final grade earned in the retaken section will be used to calculate his or her ACC grade point average (GPA). The original section and course grade will be reflected on the student’s ACC transcript, but the student’s original course grade will not be used to calculate GPA at ACC.

** NOTE: Some of ACC's transfer partners do not follow the same policy regarding retaken classes & GPA. They calculate the cumulative GPA based on all transcripted credits including course grades of "F." Students should contact their transfer institution to verify how GPA will be calculated with retaken classes and grades of "F."

Academic Integrity Process

Faculty members should have an academic integrity policy stated in their syllabus.

Academic integrity is taking responsibility for one's own work and respecting the work of others. This includes being honest, respectful, and responsible with the work of others. Acts of academic dishonesty/misconduct undermine the learning process, present a disadvantage to students who earn credit honestly and subvert the academic mission of the institution.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools

Faculty should be familiar with the CLS policy statements regarding the use of artificial intelligence tools.

Entering Grades

Faculty enter student final course grades through MyACC - Faculty (same place where faculty get their roster).

CLS Position on Use of Blackboard for Grades (rev. 8/22)

Faculty are expected to enter grades into Blackboard (LMS) on a regular basis, allowing students to view and maintain academic progress.

Inspire Academic Alert

Use Inspire for Academic Advising and Intervention

What is Inspire Academic Alert?

Austin Community College (ACC) is committed to student success and retention. If a student stops attending, misses assignments, or does poorly on tests, faculty can use the Academic Alert System as an intervention tool. Academic Alert is a feature of Inspire, a comprehensive student support system, that allows ACC faculty to easily and quickly communicate with students needing extra support. Faculty can identify students who are having challenges and connect them with academic guidance specialists to help them resolve issues and access resources to help students persist. It can also be used to commend students who are doing well or showing improvement in class. Alerts will go directly to the student and the assigned guidance specialist.

The goal is to quickly identify the types of support a student may need to get on track to successfully complete the course and motivate students to continue to excel.

Resources and training for Inspire Academic Alert can be accessed here: https://tled.austincc.edu/about-tled/current-projects-and-initiatives/academic-alert
