Scene 5: Bathroom Fight Scene
Analysis Video
Introduction: Huge fight breaks out in a bathroom, and a body is thrown into a sink, completely shattering it. In this scene, I am analyzing two main things: 1)if a human can truly break a completely concrete sink, and 2) if so, was the body in the film traveling fast enough to do so?
Personal Hypothesis: I am fairly sure this is realistic, but it is widely questioned across many forums as people view the sink as breaking too easily. Also, I am not sure 3 scenes is a realistic measure given the short time I have left, and would rather dedicate my extra time into creating a better presentation.
Yes, it is possible for a human to break concrete. For the analysis of the scene, I used articles relating to fists breaking concrete, as articles related to humans breaking concrete are only about fist strikes. I will consider the thrown human as the fist, and treat it as such in my mathematical analysis.
A human with a mass of 75 kg can break a floor with a compressive strength of 20-40 megaPascals. A human body would have to be travelling 24 miles per hour to actually break the concrete. Knowing the threshold for breaking the sink, I applied the simple velocity equation (difference of time/displacement) in order to get a rough estimate of the human body’s velocity upon impact. The human was thrown and traveled around a meter in around .05 seconds. Plugging these values into the equation, I got the resulting final velocity of around 20 meters per second, which is around 45 miles per hour. This means the body did travel fast enough to completely shatter the sink.
Conclusion: The body was thrown at a fast enough speed to break the concrete sink, meaning the scene is completely realistic.
