For my project I chose to analyze different body positions in climbing and the forces acting on them while a body is in equilibrium. There are three conditions for a body to be in equilibrium, the net forces in the x direction equal zero, the net forces in the y direction equal zero and the torque in the z direction around any point must equal zero. The body position and the forces acting on the body are shown on the left. In the end all of these forces must equal zero for the body to be in equilibrium. Using this requirement we can solve for each of the forces acting on the body. The variables needed are mass, gravity, height (ft to hands), distance (ft to back) and the coefficient of static friction in the shoes against the rock.
