Educational Leadership Checklist (Online)

Congratulations on your recent admission to Arizona State University. Please make sure to review the information below carefully as it contains required steps that you must complete prior to starting the program. Step 1: Set up ASU account and ASU email

• Once you receive your official notification from ASU Graduate Education to activate your ASURITE User ID, please click here.

• Next, set up your ASU email as this is the only authorized address for your program. Click here for ASU Student Email Instructions and please check your inbox frequently.

Step 2: Register for Classes

• Which courses should you register for?  Click on the link to your program page below find your course sequence by program modality, start term, and year in the "Required Courses and Plan of Study" section.

  • MEd Educational Leadership (Principalship)

• How to register: Go to My ASU > My Classes box > Registration > Add/Shopping Cart and enter in the 5 digit class registration numbers from your course sequence.

Step 3: Optional but recommended - Send copy of IVP card to GradEdPrep@asu.edu

• Upon completion of the program you will receive an Institutional Recommendation (IR) from ASU for Arizona Principalship certification.

• Advising must have either your AZ IVP card or EIN (Educator ID Number) on file before the end of the program in order to electronically send your IR to the Arizona Department of Education.

• If we do not have your IVP card or EIN on file by time you graduate, your IR will be sent to you by snail mail.

Step 4:  Explore/Apply for Financial Aid

• • It is best to contact financial aid directly.  Your academic advisor does not have the best, most up to date information related to financial issues.

Step 5: Pay Tuition and Fees

• • View payment deadlines at https://students.asu.edu/tuitiondeadlines

Step 6: Purchase Text Books

• • After you register, as it gets closer to the start of the term you can find your required books by going to My ASU > My Classes box > Books.

Step 7: Review the Current Student Resources section (left hand side menu)

Step 8: Review Certification Requirements

• • To learn more about becoming a certified principal in the state of Arizona, please visit the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) website for information on certification requirements including years of required teaching experience, Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessment (AEPA), Structured English Immersion coursework, etc. The ADE website will also help with questions that relate to general information, first time applicants, FAQ’s, out-of-state requirements, exams, testing, and fees.

  • Students seeking principal certification in states other than Arizona:

    • This program is designed to lead to Arizona Certification. If you are planning to apply for certification in other states, either via reciprocity or directly through another state, please take time to review this Professional Licensure Info tool.

• Select your program as well as the state(s) where you plan to apply for certification.

• Be sure to visit the website for your state’s credentialing body for further information.

  1. • Verify how many credits of internship the state(s) you want certification in require. Each Internship course in this program is offered as a variable credit course where you can select how many credits you want to sign up for (3+ credits). 3 credits for each internship is the requirement for the program and fulfills the requirements of AZ. Some states may require more and it is each student's responsibility to research that.

Step 9: Start Class

• • Login to MyASU

  • Under the "My Classes" tab, you will see the courses in which you are enrolled.  

    • When the course is "Open" it will be underlined.

    • Click on that course and it will bring you into the actual course for you to begin.

  • Review the Canvas Tutorial.
