The Principal Internship (EDA 584/684) serves as a cornerstone of your Master’s of Education in Educational Leadership. Across two semesters, you’ll engage in meaningful, school-based leadership work that bridges theory and practice. This is your opportunity to apply what you’ve learned: observing, collaborating, and contributing as an active member of a school’s leadership team.
Each internship is tailored to your specific context while aligning with the Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (PSEL) and the National Educational Leadership Preparation (NELP) standards, ensuring you gain the breadth and depth of experience required for principal certification by the Arizona Department of Education (ADE). To meet certification requirements, you must complete and document a minimum of 270 hours of field-based leadership activities. You must hold a position within a school during the internship and have a mentor principal who is committed to guiding your growth. Even though you may reside outside of Arizona, the ASU program is subject to approval by the Arizona Department of Education.
Please review the EDA Internship Handbook (sent to you by the course instructor after you are registered for the internship coursework) for more information. Questions or concerns can be sent to GradEdPrep@asu.edu.
Please note that some states require you to take your internship courses for more than 3 credits to meet the requirements for principal certification. These internship courses are set up as "variable credit" so that you can select the number of credits you wish to take the course for additional credit hours. For the program, the requirement is 3 credits of EDA 584 and 3 credits of EDA 684. Please check with the credentialing body in the state(s) where you wish to be certified to verify the number of credits required.
