Querrin Nature Trail & Nature Observation Point
In Progress
The Querrin Pier Community Development Group is currently in the final stages of developing and implementing a nature trail which will run along the Querrin shore connecting the burial ground and the pier.
The trail will also contain a nature observation hide which will be located on an area of land of approximately 0.2 of a hectare, inside the Lower Shannon SPA (Special Protection Area) and SAC (Special Area of Conservation) area, which was once the site of a fisherman’s thatched cottage and small holding by the O'Keefe family. The family's descendants, now resident in the USA, agreed to fund the purchase of the property as a legacy to their forefathers.
The trail and nature observation hide will be part of the recently announced Loop Head Peninsula Discovery Way.
The project is expected to be finished in the coming year.
Project Justification & Objectives
The Querrin Nature Trail and Nature Observation Hide will be an important building block for the Loop Head Peninsula Discovery Way and complement existing trails in the area.
In addition the project will raise awareness of and educate on the local natural heritage and will be a major attraction for nature enthusiasts, especially birdwatchers, which will contribute considerably to Loop Head's reputation as a nature tourism destination.
