THE CLO1 was comprised of these topics:
Study Guide # 1
a. Introduction to Transportation Planning & Engineering
b. Transportation as a System
c. Urban Transportation Planning Concepts
It is reflected in mine that the planning, design, operation, and maintenance of transportation systems are the focus of the extremely broad and complex area of transportation engineering. The movement of both goods and people must be done in a manner that is safe, quick, comfortable, convenient, economical, and ecologically friendly. This kind of work has a clear social obligation. Transportation planners and engineers are aware that transportation networks have a significant influence on how a region develops. Planning and building transportation infrastructure typically improves overall community values and living conditions.
I've chosen this video presentation as evidence of this course learning outcome number 1 because I it had come into my mind the prospects of concepts of transportation systems in planning and it
Module 1: Introduction to Transportation Planning & Engineering
In this module, Transportation Engineering is defined by Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) as: “the application of technology and scientific principles to the planning, functional design, operations and management facilities for any mode of transportation in order to provide for the rapid, safe, comfortable, convenient, economical, and environmentally compatible movement of people and goods.” I also understand the 5 phases of transportation engineering. As to mention, these are Planning, Design, Construction, Operations, and Maintenance.
Another thing that was stated here is the transportation system. To expound, A transportation system may be defined as consisting of fixed facilities, the flow entities and the control systems that permit people and goods to overcome the friction of geographical space efficiently in order to participate in a timely manner in some desired activity.
Upon learning the basics, I learned that humans require mobility as a basic requirement. Everyone has traveled for either food or pleasure from the beginning of time. and this is necessary to elucidate in a transportation setup as this sector takes part in establishing futuristic goals of the people.
In addition, I also understand here transportation as a system.
In the last couple of decades transportation systems analysis has emerged as a recognized profession. More and more government organizations, universities, researchers, consultants, and private industrial groups around the world are becoming truly multi-modal in their orientation and are opting a systematic approach to transportation problems.
The characteristics of transportation system that makes it diverse and complex are as follows:
1. Multi-modal: Covering all modes of transport; air, land, and sea for both passenger and freight.
2. Multi-sector: Encompassing the problems and viewpoints of government, private industry, and public.
3. Multi-problem: Ranging across a spectrum of issues that includes national and international policy, planning of regional system, the location and design of specific facilities, carrier management issues, regulatory, institutional and financial policies.
4. Multi-objective: Aiming at national and regional economic development, urban development, environment quality, and social quality, as well as service to users and financial and economic feasibility.
5. Multi-disciplinary: Drawing on the theories and methods of engineering, economics, operations research, political science, psychology, other natural, and social sciences, management and law.
One problem application that was stuck in my mind in this coursework assignment would be the responsibility of an engineer in planning for the development of the transportation system, the application tackles about the importance of the basic concept. To expound, to ensure success, the first thing a client needs to do is create a brief plan for the construction project. This should outline the main functionality and give reasons as to why the project is being carried out. It should also explain what the client expects from all parties during the project, including health and safety aspects. In connection with that, planning should be the basis of success in the transportation sector. We all know that transportation is important for the advancement of the nation. It is essential for general development and economic prosperity. It is also important for strategic movement in emergencies for the defense of the country and to maintain better law and order. To sum up, as a basic concept in engineering, planning should be done in order to make a structure that will benefit the sector of transportation.
In relation to the first-course learning objective, the basic concepts of highway and railroad transportation are already discussed. About the application, in civil engineering practice. These concepts would be a big help for us aspiring engineers to be more efficient in learning the sector of transportation with its importance that was stated beside this text.
In general, without the concepts, it is reflected in mine that we can't build structures effectively that is why it is important to take effort to make not just our life as an engineer easy, but make the lives of people comfortable and with class.
It is evident in this topic that it defines concepts of transportation systems analysis and planning. As it is one of the first topics, I find myself engaged based on the reflective learnings that I had in this topic.
