Module 1: Introduction to Highway and Railroad Engineering
This module introduces the basic concepts of highway and railroad transportation which focuses on highway development and planning. The module consists of the following topics: Introduction to transportation planning and Engineering, Transportation as a System, and Urban Transportation Planning Concepts. It is required to have a good and strong foundation of the aforementioned topics so that you can be able to understand the succeeding lessons with ease.
In this module, Transportation Engineering is defined by Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) as: “the application of technology and scientific principles to the planning, functional design, operations and management facilities for any mode of transportation in order to provide for the rapid, safe, comfortable, convenient, economical, and environmentally compatible movement of people and goods.” I also understand the 5 phases of transportation engineering. As to mention, these are Planning, Design, Construction, Operations, and Maintenance.
Another thing that was stated here is the transportation system. To expound, A transportation system may be defined as consisting of fixed facilities, the flow entities and the control systems that permit people and goods to overcome the friction of geographical space efficiently in order to participate in a timely manner in some desired activity.
Upon learning the basics, I learned that highway and railroad engineering doesn't only be applied in a short basis but for a longer one since it is applied in such industries like engineering, etc.
One problem application that was stuck in my mind in this coursework assignment would be the responsibility of an engineer in planning, the application tackles about the importance of the basic concept. To expound, to ensure success, the first thing a client needs to do is create a brief plan for the construction project. This should outline the main functionality and give reasons as to why the project is being carried out. It should also explain what the client expects from all parties during the project, including health and safety aspects. In connection with that, planning should be the basis of success in the transportation sector. We all know that transportation is important for the advancement of the nation. It is essential for general development and economic prosperity. It is also important for strategic movement in emergencies for the defense of the country and to maintain better law and order. To sum up, as a basic concept in engineering, planning should be done in order to make a structure that will benefit the sector of transportation.
In relation to the first-course learning objective, the basic concepts of highway and railroad transportation are already discussed. About the application, in civil engineering practice. These concepts would be a big help[ for us aspiring engineers to be more efficient in learning the sector of transportation with its importance that was stated beside this text.
In general, without the concepts, it is reflected in mine that we can't build structures effectively that is why it is important to take effort to make not just our life as an engineer easy, but make the lives of people comfortable and with class.
It is evident in this topic that discussed the basic concepts of highway and railroad transportation and present how to apply them in civil engineering practice. As it is one of the middle topics, I find myself engaged based on the reflective learnings that I had in this topic.
In addition, I also understand here the importance of transportation. These are as follows:
1. WORK AND COMMERCE
Many businesses and industries need efficient and fast transport in order for them to deliver and provide raw materials and products and maintain stable ventures that can generate revenue.
Transport offers numerous opportunities within the employment sector.
2. CONNECTIONS AND CONVENIENCE
When individuals look for jobs or premises for their businesses, one of the main factors they consider is the commute. Transportation creates a convenient way to get the things you need from wherever you are.
3. DEVELOPING ECONOMIES
Transport is a vital sector and the amount of expenditure and investment in various operations has far-reaching effects on the world’s economy.
4. STREAMLINING THE TOURISM SECTOR
Through the role of moving people and goods, transport enables tourism and travel by making it possible for people to go to the places they want to see. Without transportation, tourism cannot develop, and the international movement would be a pipe dream.
In order for tourists to be able to reach their destinations, they need an array of transport options that they select according to factors such as cost, convenience, and efficiency.
5. MOVING BUSINESSES TO THE NEXT LEVEL
Moving goods from areas where production occurs to areas where they are required links companies to their customers and suppliers.
Factors such as mishandling products while in transit, wrong shipping locations, and late deliveries can lead to unhappy customers who express their dissatisfaction by no longer making purchases from the company. An effective transport system plays a valuable role in sustaining services on a long-term basis and keeping the company afloat. Transport is necessary for every stage of the production process, from designing concepts and manufacturing to delivery and consumption.
In this module, It is also reflected in my mind the context of distance pacing. Based from what I know, pacing consists of counting the number of steps or paces in a required distance. Also, a pace is pertaining to the length of a step in walking and can be measured from heel to heel or from toe to toe.
Upon learning the basics, I learned that surveying doesn't only be applied in a short basis but for a longer one since it is applied in such industries like engineering, etc.
