Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship

The Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship honors the legacy of the abolitionist and statesman with a fully funded summer study abroad program. This Fellowship is developed for students of color and selection is in the spirit of Douglass himself with special emphasis on leadership, social justice, agitation for positive change and cross-cultural understanding.  The program typically takes place in Ireland! Consider applying for this unique international program to develop change leaders who make an impact on their community and the world. 


CLS - Critical Language Scholarship Program

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a competitive, fully funded summer study abroad opportunity for American college and university students to learn languages (for academic credit) essential to America’s engagement with the world. The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period, and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers.

Title VIII Research Scholar & Title VIII Combined Research & Language Training Programs

The Title VIII Research Scholar and Title VIII Combined Research & Language Training Programs are designed for U.S. graduate students, Ph.D. candidates, faculty, and post-doctoral scholars seeking to complete policy-relevant research overseas.

Fellowships last three to nine consecutive months and include round-trip international travel; housing and living stipends; visa support; overseas health, accident, and evacuation insurance; archive access; and logistical support. Following the completion of the research term, fellows will return to the U.S. and share their findings through presentations, articles, and lectures in order to strengthen and broaden current scholarship in the region.

Research can be conducted in the following countries: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship (Application Deadline March & October)

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness.

The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.

Boren Scholarship (For MESP students only) 

Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students by focusing on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad. 

The maximum scholarship award is $10,000 for a semester abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need.

Explore the World Travel Scholarship

The Explore the World Travel Scholarship is awarded yearly by Hostelling International USA (HI USA) to help fund travel with an educational or service component. Applicants must be between the ages of 18-30, be a U.S. citizen or green card holder, demonstrate financial need as outlined in the application guidelines, and reside or attend school in one of the select metropolitan areas where HI USA has a community presence.

Scholarships are in the amount of $2,000, paid in $1,000 installments pre- and post-travel.

Freeman - ASIA

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.

Fund for Education Abroad

The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) invests in promising students with financial need who wish to study abroad. Potential applicants who meet the eligibility requirements may participate in any international education program that meets their academic objectives. FEA gives preference to applicants from groups underrepresented in study abroad, including minority, community college, and first-generation college students.

Scholarships range from $1,500 – $10,000. Award amounts vary depending on the length of study and student need.

Gilman-McCain Scholarship (For undergraduate children of Active Duty Service Members)

The U.S. Department of State’s Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate child dependents of active duty service members (Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard) to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs.
