In math 9 (the basic freshman year math class) we learned the basic algebra, trigonometry, pothgremtherium equations and more. Although I don't see myself as good at math I didn't struggle in this class or struggle to keep my grade up. I think that in the future the base that we formed in this class will help me succeed in future math classes. We do a lot of practicing what we learn with worksheets, group collaboration and POWS. Not very often we take tests to see how well we are doing but we seem to have enough work to help us do well on the tests.
Pit and The Pendulum Reflection
The central problem was Edgar Allen Poe and the pendulum. We didn’t know how long until the pendulum would hit the character and if he would have time to escape the pit. Variables such as the length of the pendulum string, the weight, and the angle of the release. We measured the time it took different pendulums to complete a full swing back and forth while also noting the variables in effect. We learned about this process as well as graphing, curve fitting, map the data points on the graph, found means, mode, range, and sigma. These skills helped us come to a conclusion of if the character would be able to escape the pit in time before the pendulum kills him. We modeled the pendulum as a class and timed it. We used the math that we learned as well as the equation T = 0.33land made an equation to estimate how long it would take for the 30 foot pendulum in the story to swing 12 times. One time would take 6.26 seconds. We multiplied this and got 75.12 seconds or, a minute and 15 seconds. We came to the conclusion that this would not be enough time to escape the way the character in the story was trying to do so.
This POW (Problem of the week) was one of the hardest POWS that we have done so far. In order to do this POW we had to find out how many eggs the farmer had before they all broke. While solving this POW I learned new problem solving skills and practice the things that we were learning in class
These assignments were pretty much the same thing. They had things such as normal distribution, graphing etc. that we have been learning in class. I got a 10/10 on the review and then 20/22 on the actual quiz.
This worksheet was a helpful thing that helped me grow my understanding on normal distribution. After doing this worksheet I felt that I had mastered the skills such as finding the sigma, mean, making a normal distribution, and then finding amounts and percentages from it. I got a 10/10 on this.
The topic from this unit that was the easiest for me to under stand would probably be Pythagorean theorem or factoring. I felt that these were easy to get down after practice and I felt that I was able to get a hang of them fastest out of all the things that we learned. The topic that challenged me the most would be simplifying and expanding certain problems. Ive done these before in prevoius years but I think that I forgot how to do it with certin cenerios and so it was hardest for me. If I was to explain factoring to someone that missed class I would tell them to first find a number that each of the numbers in the equation can be divisble by. Next I would tell them to devide each of the numbers by that number and place the sum of that back into the equation. Next they would place the number they divided with on the outside of parathesis.
For this test we did a practice test before to practice, I struggled a little bit with some of the sections so I was nervous for the actual thing. Completing the test I struggled a little bit but it was open note so that helped me and the practice test as well. I got a 20/24 and attempted the practice questions. I was proud of myslef for trying my best and doing way better than I thought I could.
For this worksheet we solved literal equations. We were only required to complete 4 of them but I did all 12. I got a 115% on this assignment which I was very happy with how it turned out. It also gave me a lot of practice.
For this worksheet we used factorizing and expanding of equations. I got a 115% on this worksheet because I got all of them correct including the extra credit.
