In this class we learned a lot about socialization, the silk road, research, writing, and more. We did this by completing three projects. One was the socialization and mask project. One was the anthology writing project and the last was the Echoes of the past silk road project.
For this project we created a mask and an essay explaining/showing the ways that socialization has impacted our identities. Before we started making our main projects we learned about socialization and the different sides of it. We did this by reading essays from past students, reading the book The Outsiders and thinking about the ways that socialization is bad and good to create a research paragraph that would be in our essays. Then we made a mask of our faces with plaster that we then decorated with different materials to make symbols of our socialization. Our essays explained different ways that we were socialized with different evidence and specific examples. This project helped us understand the meaning of socialization and the ways the people around us and the norms, cultures, careers, bullying, racism, ability and disability have shaped us and the ways we interact and view ourselves, the world, and the people around us.
I was challenged when making my mask and overcoming things that I didn’t like that I did to my mask. I also encountered challenges when I was writing my essay, when writing it sometimes it was hard to think of ideas, make changes, and come up with what to write about. I learned from these experiences by overcoming them and preparing myself for the next time a challenge comes. I felt stuck when writing my essay because I redid parts multiple times and ran out of ideas and evidence to include. I overcame that feeling by stepping back and really taking time to think about what I needed to include in my essay. I learned that perseverance is super important to have motivation to keep going on with my essay and be passionate about what I am writing about. I think that the most challenging part of writing my essay was finding the evidence and then revising on the explanation of the evidence was the most difficult. I pushed through this challenge by reading through it, getting peer feedback and taking time to implement the feedback I received. I think this experience will help me when writing in the future because I will have the experience of writing in a more professional way. I think that I grew as a writer in this project because I was able to use the TEA format in my writing and explain my evidence with it properly formatted. I grew through this because this way of writing helped me really connect the reader and myself to my essay. A place where I really saw this was when I was using the time I was in school with my friends and we had an issue with the teacher. I think that this evidence was hard to explain but I was able to do so. I think that deciding whether or not I wanted to use the photos on my mask or not was hard as well as what else to put besides the photos was also a challenge. This process taught me about the way I present myself to others by learning to show things without words only and that we can show things without explaining them completely. My understanding of socialization and identity changed throughout this project by me learning what it really means to be socialized and the way it is a huge part of my identity. I learned that I as a person am more impacted by socialization than I thought and that being surrounded by people all the time has impacted me a lot. I learned that I have experienced a lot of things that have shaped the way that I am now. This affects the way I view myself and others in my community because these are things that not everyone knows about, and this shaped the way I see others because we don’t always know the way that people have been shaped by their past experiences. My biggest takeaway from this project was that socialization is all around us, shaping our identities, all the time even if we don’t know it. This changed the way I see the world because what is happening in our world is shaping us. Like in the outsiders when the kids are seeing a whole different side of the place we are living in with the violence that we don’t see they are affected by directly. My advice would be to have a more open mind to the content we are learning and try my hardest to be invested in the things we are learning even if I can’t really see myself being able to relate to the stories etc. I think this would help me be able to enjoy the whole unit instead of just waiting for the fun parts. I hope people see the ways that I personally have been socialized and that the simple things in our life are big parts of our socialization stories. I think that I did succeed in this because I feel that my mask shows that almost directly and then my essay goes in depth in explaining each part of the ways that I am socialized the most.
During this project we learned about ancient civilizations along the silk road. We were able to do this by being introduced to civilizations such as Rome, Greece, The Step People, India, China and more. We then did multiple mini activities to learn about them and then chose one to focus on to complete an exhibition piece. I chose Ancient Rome. In groups of around 4 we created exhibits that displayed inventions, Religion, Trade, Achievements, Role on the Silk Road and more which we learned during the unit. This project included a 3D piece and a sign explaining our piece. My group made an Aqueduct and an Arch. Our final pieces were displayed during exhibition in a museum style exhibit along side projects from the other pods that did the same civilization.
I faced challenges during this project such as sometimes my group would be off task or we wouldn’t have stuff to do because my partner was doing the main piece at home. I faced success during this project such as being able to come out with a very well put together final exhibit. A specific moment that highlights what I have learned was while I was writing the sign to go with our Aqueduct display. I used knowledge that I had gained about Aqueducts to help me write it. I also incorporated other elements about the Roman lifestyle etc. which I had learned throughout the project.
A time that I felt stuck or frustrated was when we were brainstorming for our project. My group was struggling to find and agree on project ideas. I handled this by being calm and listening to everyone's ideas and helped my group find compromises and had the idea of splitting the group and making two projects. I learned about perseverance and problem solving during this situation because I realized that it is important to hear everyone's ideas and speak your own to help everyone have a happy outcome in the end.
The things that surprised me the most about Ancient Rome was the complexity of their architecture. An example of this is that I had no clue how big and long the aqueducts could be, I learned that some of them reached about 57 miles long which was super shocking to me. Rome also surprised me with their culture because I didn’t really think of laws too much and being a part of their culture during that time but Rome had them displayed which was cool to me. A lot of other elements were very interesting about Rome too.
The connection that I noticed between my civilization and others was its connection with Greece. Greece and Rome seemed to have very similar architecture and religions. It seemed like from what I learned that Rome incorporated a lot of Greek culture into their own. I think that cultural exchange shaped those relationships because with exchange they were most likely able to not fight and instead get along and be more of one instead of with conflicting culture.
In my group I played a role of doing my part in my partner group while also supporting the other partner group in my civilization. I created all the written pieces that went along with our final Aqueduct project. I did research and writing to create an informational plaque that was displayed as our museum sign and artist statement. I did the writing for our labels that went onto the aqueduct and did the research to be able to create those too. I think that my help allowed my group to be successful and have a cleaner museum exhibit.
I think that what helped my group work together was us communicating and also being in smaller groups inside of our civilization. I think these things allowed us to be able to combine ideas and work together better. I don’t think there was major challenges that my group had to overcome. This experience allowed me to grow because I was able to work with new people and get knowledge from them. I was also able to shape my view on collaborating with different people as well.
The part of my final exhibit that I am most proud of is the written piece that I created. I think that I was able to complete a nice and refined piece of writing that contributed well to the project. I am also proud of how our team was able to create such a well looking overall project and how it all fit together in the end.
