In 3D art class we explore many forms of making art that is experienceable from multiple angles. We will/have used many materials, a few of them being paper and clay. We learn many skills and facts while experimenting with new things. I enjoy this class because it allows me to try a new kind of art that involves a lot of freedom and choice.
We created these pieces of work using only paper and glue (anything used to hold the paper was not allowed to be visible). There were no other major guidelines. I decided to create a piece that had a layered center and then was surrounded by rolled up paper swirls. I created the center by cutting the center out of the paper and made the swirls by rolling a sheet of paper and then cut it to different sizes. During this process I learned that making a 3D piece can come in many ways and it takes lots of time and patience no matter how "simple" it looks. If I could change one thing I would have taken more time on the layered center and done more of a same shape getting bigger affect. But overall I like this piece and am happy with how it turned out.
The steps that I took were first I planned my print by sketching a design in my notebook, second I transferred it to the linoleum first in pencil and then in sharpie, third I cut it out with the carving tools by carving in the places I sharpied, and then finally printed my design, in between prints touching up places that need it. The most challenging part of carving my design was the curves, in my opinion they were the hardest place to get the way I wanted them to look. The part of the process I enjoyed the most was the carving part, it was the most fun to me and was the main part that you could see the design come to life. The decisions that I made about contrast was having both the sun and stars, curves and points and also the positive and negative space created by the carved spaces. My final print was a scene that had stars, the moon, the sun, flowers, and birds. I would want the viewers to notice the sky first, I think it takes up a lot of the piece and also creates the scene of both it being night and day, which was also the way my design shows contrast. For the contrast requirement I created the scene of night, and day. I did this with the sun and the moon/stars being in the picture together. If I could change one thing about my print I would clean it up a bit. I think it looks a little rushed and not as complete as I wanted it to be with some unclean edges etc. I am most proud of the stars, I think I was worried about the way they would look, but I was happy with the way they looked when they were printed. The difference between linocut and Styrofoam that I noticed the most was how much harder it was to carve the linoleum rather than the Styrofoam where we were just pushing it down. I also noticed that the prints (as far as i could tell) were more sharp of lines and had a more complete, more professional print that came out. What I learned about print making through trying both was the process and just the overall experience. I had never done print making before and so it was a new experience for me entirely. And I never knew how some artists have created such big complex prints like we learned about in the videos. I thought print making was super cool and an overall fun experience that I enjoyed.
For this project we were allowed to do whatever we wanted. I decided to use crochet to create a bunny. I followed a tutorial online to successfully have a completed design. I also chose a fluffy string and used my previous crochet experience to make my piece. Something that I am proud of is the completed look of it, I esspecailly like the ears. I have never made a crochet stuffed animal so for my first time I am happy with how it turned out. Something that I learned was that everything can be 3D art, and I also learned some new crochet techniques.
