During the course of the year we have learned about cells, genetics, body systems, sustainability, cancer and more. We learn through labs, research, completing projects, and interactive activities. I enjoy this class because we have been able to have many experiences that have helped me learn a lot about the way that organisms including us function and what affects the important parts.
For this project we created posters and did a unit on ways that things such as agriculture affect the environment and ecosystems. My project focused on food production. I learned how the ways that we produce food hurt animals and their habitats. I will carry forward the thought of our everyday actions will always impact the environment. - We displayed these projects along side our bottle ecosystems at exhibition.
For this project we designed an ecosystem in a bottle(s) that had land and water. Inside of each of the sides there was organisms such as fish, snails, crickets, plants, cockroaches, worms, grass, and more. Each day for 2 months we tracked temperature, PH, Nitrate, Nitrite, Ammonia, grass height and a wild card which for my group was duck weed coverage. We also noted anything that was different such as death of organisms, growth of mold, etc. I learned a lot about the functionality of ecosystems and how everything works together. I will carry forward from this project the knowledge of how amazing all the moving parts of just one small ecosystem are.
During this project we looked at the way cancer forms, grows, affects the body, and more. We had a guest speaker come in, made concept maps, learned about different kinds of cancer and chose one topic to focus on for a group project. My final topic question was: "What are some ways we can prevent cancer deaths due to alcohol consumption". My group member and I demonstrated the way the alcohol causes cell mutation, affects the liver, and causes DNA mutation (which all can cause cancer). I learned a lot about different cancer causes, treatments, types and more, both from my group and others. I will carry forward awareness of how many things can cause cancer.
For this experience in groups we dissected a fetal pig over the course of 2 weeks. Every other day we would dissect a new area, some of these were the organs, brain, and heart. I learned what the systems in the body look like in person. We did this dissection as an introduction into learning about systems, cells and cancer. I will carry forward from this project the experience of dissecting a whole animal, in the past I have done a heart and I was worried for this experience but it wasn't quite as bad as I thought and I am happy that I was able to complete it.
