Course Description: 2D Art is an introductory course in the visual arts based upon projects in 2-dimensional design and composition. Projects using a wide variety of media will provide opportunities for students to become acquainted with the materials, principles, and terminology of art. Students may or may not have special ability in art but a genuine interested and willingness to work are necessary. Students who plan to take Advanced Art should take 2-Dimensional Art in 9th grade or as soon as possible.

Course Description: This is a hands on course focusing on building and constructing 3D Art. Concepts of design in spatial relationships will be explored. 3D Art may be taken in addition to or instead of 2-Dimensional Art. Emphasis will be on creative thinking and problem solving. Students may or may not have special ability in art, but a genuine interest and willingness to work are necessary. Students who plan to take Ceramics or Advanced Art classes should take 3D Art as soon as possible.

Course Description: Concepts of design and composition are explored more deeply than in basic art. Emphasis is given to composition and drawing as a method of personal communication. The course focuses on improving techniques in painting, drawing, and printmaking.

Course Description: The honors level AP Studio Art is structured as a college course. Its purpose is to enable those enrolled to build a portfolio for assessment by the College Board in AP Studio Art. This course is intended for highly motivated students committed to a serious study of studio art. AP Studio Art involves a higher level of proficiency and significantly more time than other high school art courses. Performance in other studio courses will be the criterion for placement in this class. Quality of work should reflect first year college level standards. A weighted grade will be given.

Course Description: Ceramics 1 provides an introductory experience with handbuilding techniques, vocabulary, and history of clay. Students will explore techniques including, but not limited to: pinch pots, coil pots and slab pots. While learning about and applying various handbuilding techniques, students will learn to critique, evaluate and appreciate various ceramic works of art. Ceramics 1 builds on and utilizes the elements and principles of art, which are studied in the prerequisite course. Course prerequisites: Completion of Introduction to 3-D art with a final grade of a B- or greater

Course Description: Advanced Ceramics is designed for students to build on and further develop the skills obtained through the successful completion of Ceramics 1. Students will create ceramic works based on a central theme of their choice allowing personalized artwork as well a unified body of work. Students will explore, research, design, plan and execute the construction of their forms throughout the semester while utilizing and further developing their skills obtained in ceramics 1. Problem solving will be an integral part of this course as students gain a better understanding of clay.
