Google Guardian Summaries

Google Guardian - Parent Account

As part of Google Classroom, we also have a new facility for parental accounts know as Google Guardian. This will allow email summaries to be sent to parents and guardians. As a result you would begin to receive emails from this service to your allocated email address(es).

As parents and guardians you are able to choose the frequency of these emails, such as daily or weekly and you can unsubscribe or remove yourself from the emails at any time by following the onscreen unsubscribe icon. (Please Note: Daily means Monday to Friday. You will not receive email summaries on Saturdays or Sundays).

To the right is an example of a guardian summary so you can see what to expect for your child.

We hope that this service will allow you to monitor your child’s engagement with online learning and the progress that they are making.

Why haven't I received an email invitation?

You won’t get an email invitation if:

  • Your student’s school hasn’t set up guardian email summaries.

  • Your student’s teachers aren’t participating in guardian email summaries.

  • You aren’t the guardian of the student.

If you haven’t gotten the invitation, check your spam folder. Otherwise, contact your student’s school and ask them to send another invitation.

I want guardian summaries sent to a different email address. Can I change the address?

How do I manage my guardian email settings?

How do I get email summaries of my student’s work?

To get email summaries of your student’s work, you must accept an email invitation from a teacher or administrator. You have 120 days to accept an invitation before it expires. You can unsubscribe from summaries or remove yourself as a guardian at any time.

  1. The teacher or administrator emails you an invitation to join your student’s class.

  2. In your email program, open your email invitation.

  3. Click Accept.
    If you’re not the guardian, click I’m Not The Guardian.

  4. Click Accept to confirm.

When you accept an invitation, you and your student get an email confirmation.

I’ve accepted the invitation. Where will the emails be sent?

If you have a Google Account

  1. In Classroom, go to the email settings page.

  2. Sign in to Classroom to check the email address where the summaries are sent.

If you don’t have a Google Account

Guardian email summaries are sent to the email address that you signed up with. This address is the same email address where the invitation was sent.

Do I need a Gmail address or a Google Account?

No. To get an invitation for email summaries, you can use any email address. When you accept the invitation, you get weekly summaries at that email address. However, with a free Google Account, you can adjust email summaries. For example, you can change their frequency.

Can I sign in to my student's classroom?

No. Guardians can't access Classroom or their student's assignments due to privacy laws. Guardians can only get email summaries if your student's teacher allows it.

How do I stop getting summaries?

On all Google pages within 'Google for Education' you can find the help button (small grey circle with a question mark as shown above).

Click on this button and select ‘Help’ to be shown a list of help topics related to the page that you are on (Drive, Gmail, Classroom, etc).

Select the topic you wish to learn more of and help will be displayed (there should be options for each type of device that you may be using; Computer, Android, IPhone/IPad).
