Physical Education

"Physical Education is that part of Education which proceeds by means of, or predominantly through, physical activity; it is not some separate, partially related field".

Voltmer and Esslinger, 1949.

"Tell me and I forget,

Show me and I remember,

Involve me and I understand."

Confucius 500 BC.

Two quotes which encapsulate the nature and importance of learning through the medium of physical experience. Physical Education is very much about providing for individuals a variety of enjoyable, demanding and rewarding challenges through which physical skills, knowledge and understanding can be developed.

We study PE because it provides opportunity to develop physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. It offers a comprehensive range of learning experiences designed to meet the needs of the individual pupil and to encourage their active involvement as a performer, informed observer and official. Provide opportunities for social education and personal development through team or group activities, enhancing development of co-operation and a sense of fair play within the Academy, with other schools, and working in group situations raising the awareness of individual and group needs. It promotes a healthy, active lifestyle, through various experiences which will also raise awareness of leisure and other relevant facilities within the community in order to develop understanding of the importance of exercise and encourage a long term strategy of a healthy lifestyle.

BTEC Sport

This year the Academy has opted to study the BTEC First Award in Sport. This course will take place at the Academy, local Primary Schools and local sports facilities. Students undertake 4 units, three of which have a number of assignments to complete. Unit 1 will be assessed by external examination. The assessment is continuous and both practical and theory based which means that there are assignments that need to be completed in full.

These courses prepare students for careers in the sports sector, such as a fitness instructor, sports coach, outdoor pursuits instructor or a career in the Armed Forces. It can also lead to a BTEC Level 3 qualification which is equivalent to an A Level qualification and can be used to gain entry into University.
