Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
At Hillsview Academy, we follow a Mastery Curriculum - The intention of this approach is to provide all children with full access to the curriculum, enabling them to achieve confidence and competence – ‘mastery’ – in mathematics.
At the end of your child’s education at Hillsview Academy, each student will obtain the best possible results at KS3 and 4, obtaining the formal qualification needed for his/her chosen career or entry into higher or further education.
Our aims are to ensure that all pupils:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
Key Stage 3
In year 7, 8 and 9 every student will follow the AET SOW, a programme developed in line with the national curriculum and that has the mastery of maths at the heart of it. We use assessments to find students gaps in knowledge which allows teachers to tailor the teaching to individually suit the students’ needs. In addition, We run interventions across all year groups to ensure that no child falls behind as we appreciate they may just need more support / or time to understand new more complex concepts.
In KS3, we are determined that the basic numeracy skills that the students attained at KS2 are not lost and forgotten. We have built-in two numeracy programmes into the school week. During tutorial time students participate in Timestable Rockstars – developing their proficiency and speed of the times tables. The second, a twice weekly timed skills test - Numeracy Ninjas - this gives the students an opportunity to develop a wider range of basic skills which allows them greater access to more challenging KS4 topic areas.
Key Stage 4
Every student follows an AET SOW which seamlessly
prepares them to take the Edexcel GCSE qualification in mathematics.
The tier of entry the students undertake is dependent upon their attainment in mathematics. (Foundation level allows students to achieve up to a grade 5 and Higher level up to a grade 9).
Within the Mathematics department there are a number of opportunities for students to further their mathematical problem solving skills and logical ability. In Year 7 & 8 and again in Year 10, students have the opportunity to take part in the UK Mathematics Challenge.
Students at Hillsview Academy also have the opportunity to engage and enjoy mathematics on a Wednesday lunchtime when we run a maths game and problem solving club.
