AP Economics is a full year course covering both AP Microeconomics (first semester) and AP Macroeconomics (second semester). Each of these is equivalent to a one semester college level introduction to microeconomics and macroeconomics respectively. During the first semester, students are introduced to the principles of microeconomics that apply to the functions of individual economic decision-makers. The course also develops students’ familiarity with the operation of product and factor markets, distributions of income, market failure, and the role of government in promoting greater efficiency and equity in the economy. During the second semester students study the macroeconomic principles that govern an economic system as a whole, with emphasis on national income, price-level determination, economic performance measures, the financial sector, stabilization policies, economic growth, and international economics. Throughout the course, students learn to interpret and analyze graphs, charts, and data to explain key economic concepts and evaluate policy decisions. The course begins with the essential economic theory needed to engage with macroeconomic topics. No prior study of economics is required, though students should be comfortable with advanced high school–level reading, basic mathematics, and graphing skills. Students will have the option to sit for the AP Macroeconomics and AP Microeconomics Exams at the end of the course.
All assessments follow AP guidelines, including a quantitative component.
