Course Description:

The focus of this course is directed towards developing and understanding the constructed nature of meanings generated by language and the function of context in this process. The model for Language A. Language and Literature is the same at Standard Level and at Higher Level, but there are significant quantitative and qualitative differences between the levels. The aims of the Language A: Language and Literature course are: to introduce students to a range of texts from different periods, styles and genres; to develop in students the ability to engage in close, detailed analysis of individual texts and make relevant connections; and to develop the students’ powers of expression, both in oral and written communication.

The program encourages students to recognize the importance of the contexts in which texts are written and received. Through the study of texts, it encourages an appreciation of the different perspectives of people from other cultures, and how these perspectives construct meaning, teaching the students to appreciate the formal, stylistic and aesthetic qualities of texts. It also promotes in students an enjoyment of, and lifelong interest in, language and literature; develops in students an understanding of how language, culture and context determine the ways in which meaning is constructed in the text; and encourages students to think critically about the different interactions between text, audience and purpose.

The assessment is aligned with the IBO assessment criteria. Predictions are based on Paper 1 and Paper 2 tests and mocks and oral presentations.

Note: Full IB candidates who take examinations in both English A and Greek A may earn an IB bilingual diploma.
