Analyze Position, Velocity, & Acceleration w/ Differentiation
Velocity/Speed/Acceleration:
Velocity is the derivative of distance with standard units of m/s. Negative vs. positive velocity indicates direction of motion.
Speed represents the absolute value of velocity.
Acceleration is the derivative of velocity with standard units of m/s2.
Moving to the Left/Right: Refers to a change in direction of position of an object. If an object is moving to the “left,” the velocity would be negative, or f'(x)<0 . If the object is moving to the “right,” the velocity would be positive, or f'(x)>0.
Speed increasing/decreasing: Refers to the rate of change of velocity (ACCELERATION). Therefore, determine the ACCELERATION and the velocity at that moment.
For the speed to be increasing, the velocity and acceleration must have the SAME sign (moving away from the origin).
If the velocity and acceleration have DIFFERENT signs (moving towards the origin), the speed is decreasing.
