Training and Intervention

One of the five core functions of Educational Psychologists (EPs) in Scotland in Intervention. Aberdeen City Council (ACC) Educational Psychology Service (EPS) operate a Consultation model of service delivery (more information on this can be found within the Consultation section). During a Consultation, a Child’s Plan, School Review or a Multi-Agency meeting, an EP will look for which supports or interventions would help move a situation forward. These normally take the form of recommendations for a pupil’s school or partners to a plan to take forward. Sometimes the EPS will recommend a particular intervention or type of intervention for a provision to use with a pupil, small group, cohort or universally across the provision. In some cases ACC EPS might do some 1:1 intervention work with a pupil, or work with a group of pupils. However best practice through Consultation is most effective, least intrusive and we know that nurture and attachment principles show us that those with an existing relationship with the pupil are best placed to deliver supports.

As part of our universal offer to schools, the EPS supports the implementation and delivery of interventions around developing resilience, emotional intelligence, nurture, change and loss, play and communication approaches. As part of our Early Intervention Consultation process (see separate information sheet on our Consultation page) we might recommend particular interventions for schools to try as part of a solution focused problem solving discussion. As part of our strategic strands, ACC EPS delivers Emotion Coaching training, are registered ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) trainers and has an accredited trainer in Seasons for Growth.

We can support schools with a variety of interventions and the implementation and evaluation of these interventions. Specific interventions that we can offer or support with include:
