Guitar 5

In this chapter, we will focus on playing in the key of G Major, learning scales, scale studies, and simple songs.

G Major has one sharp: F#. That means that every time you have an F, you should play it one fret higher to get an F#. 1:1 becomes 1:2, 4:3 becomes 4:4, and 6:1 becomes 6:2. Just like the last chapter, the same scale is written twice: once with letters and once with finger code.

1. G Major Scale

(Yes, this is the same scale, but with finger code instead of note names. The finger code makes it take up more space. Play your favorite.)

2. G Scale Study #1

These are the same scale studies we learned in the last chapter. This time, they’re based on the G scale. Check back to the scale to remember how to play all the F#s! If you know the scale well, you might be able to review the pattern and play the scale study by ear.

3. G Scale Study #2

Now that you're ready for your first songs in the key of G, please watch this video to review how to read a key signature.

4. Hey Ho

Hey Ho is a round. Once you can play it well, find a classmate or two to join you!

5. Red River Valley

You know all these chords! Once you’ve learned the melody, try the chords. You can use them to accompany the recording of the melody, or try having a friend play the melody. The chords begin when the melody plays the third note (B). Watch out for the F# in the fourth line!

Congratulations! You've completed Chapter 5 of the Guitar Class! If you've played and mastered every song in this chapter, you can go on to Chapter 6!
