Cover Project

In this unit, you will create, perform, and record a cover of an existing song.

  1. Choose a song. When making your choice, find out what Chords it uses, the Speed of the chord changes, and what Instruments are used (CSI). This will give you a better chance of being successful with your song.
    1. If there are only a few chords, but they're chords you don't know, we can probably transpose the song to use familiar chords (or chords that are easier to learn)
    2. If the chords change really fast, it will be much harder to play.
    3. You do not have to copy the same instrumentation as the original. But, if you want your version of the song to sound similar to the original, you should pick one that uses instruments you have access to in class (keyboard, guitar, ukulele)
  2. Learn the chords. Get very comfortable switching between them. Try playing the chords along with a recording of your song, and see if you can keep up.
    • Remember, it's OK to play each chord fewer times (fewer strums) if that allows you to get to the next chord on time.
  3. Create your drum track. Make sure it's the same speed as you'll want your song to end up. It can be as simple or as complex as you'd like.
  4. Add your chords to the recording. Feel free to edit or loop your recordings.
  5. Add a bass line
    • The most simple bass line follows the roots (names) of the chords. It should be played on a bass (live or within Soundation), low piano, or low guitar.
  6. Add lyrics
    • Record a track with the lyrics. You will not be graded on the accuracy of your voice- only on whether you sing the words in time with the rest of the instruments.
  7. Or, add something extra. If you don't want to sing, you may add one of these extra options:
    • A second chord instrument (if you've already recorded the chords on guitar, add ukulele or piano!)
    • An instrumental solo
    • An intro
    • Check in with Mrs. Dubois if you have other ideas!
