Guitar 4

In this chapter, we will focus on playing in the key of C Major, learning scales, scale studies, and simple songs. The next three chapters all begin with major scales in different keys. Watch the video to learn about major scales and why we learn them. Each major scale is written two ways: once with letter names, and once with fingerings (string:fret). Read whichever one you prefer.

1. C Major Scale

I provide two versions of each major scale: one with note names, one with finger code (string:fret). Read whichever one is more comfortable for you.

3. C Scale Study #1

We learn scale studies in each key to help us recognize scale patterns, and as great exercises for speed and finger dexterity. Learn them slowly, then practice them faster and faster. Try to learn them by pattern (use the scale!) and not note-by-note.

4. C Scale Study #2

5. Ode to Joy

Ode to Joy is widely known for being the main theme in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.

5. Star Spangled Banner

Lyrics: Francis Scott Key, Music: John Stafford Smith
