Number of fraud cases increasing over the years

PETALING JAYA: The number of insurance fraud cases is increasing steadily over the years.

Although police records put the amount involved at about RM12mil in the past four years, the industry estimates that losses due to bogus claims run into the hundreds of millions of ringgit yearly.

However, it is difficult to determine the actual amount lost as a result of fraudulent claims. Unlike robbery or murder, insurance fraud is not easily detectable.

The federal Commercial Crimes Investigations Department puts the losses at RM12.7mil between 2007 and August 2010.

Selangor often emerges tops with the highest number of cases. Other states with high number of cases include Kuala Lumpur and Johor.

In 2007, a total of 38 cases involving RM4.1mil in losses were reported. However, 2008 saw a slight drop in the number of cases, with Selangor topping the states with RM1.3mil.

The number of fraud cases was at its highest in 2009, with 65 cases involving RM5.9mil in losses.

Last year’s figures – until August – stood at RM1.1mil with 50 cases reported.

Namun, sukar untuk menentukan jumlah sebenar hilang sebagai akibat tuntutan palsu. Tidak seperti rompakan atau pembunuhan, penipuan insurans tidak mudah dikesan.

Komersial persekutuan Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah menempatkan kerugian di RM12.7mil antara tahun 2007 dan Ogos 2010.

Selangor sering muncul puncak dengan jumlah tertinggi kes. negara-negara lain dengan jumlah kes yang tinggi termasuk Kuala Lumpur dan Johor.

Pada tahun 2007, sebanyak 38 kes yang melibatkan RM4.1mil kerugian yang dilaporkan. Namun, 2008 terjadi sedikit penurunan jumlah kes, dengan Selangor topping negara-negara dengan RM1.3mil.
