An Inorganic Light Engine: Monolithically Integrated LED Arrays as Projection Sources

Abstract:
LEDs are the brightest controllable light source and can achieve a high optical power densities exceeding 40 W/cm2. The high brightness enables the use of LEDs, if patterned into an array, as a light and pattern generation source for projection displays. Compared with current projection display systems, these arrays would allow for significant improvements in power consumption and overall system efficiency. I will present the current state of development of our proof-of-principle LED arrays. In addition, I will discuss the use of laser-crystallized thin film silicon transistors integrated with these LEDs for active matrix arrays.
Speaker’s Bio:
Vincent Lee graduated with his B.S. in electrical and computer engineering at Rutgers University and M.S. in electrical engineering at Columbia University in 2007 and 2009 respectively. He is currently a graduate student at Columbia University working in the Columbia Laboratory for Unconventional Electronics (CLUE) on integration of compound semiconductors with laser crystallized thin film silicon transistors.

After 4:30PM metered parking is also available on 120th Street (be sure to bring a few quarters, the meters run until 10PM and allow 0.5h per quarter). Columbia is on the #1 subway line which connects directly to NJ Transit and the LIRR at Penn Station, and Metro-North via the Shuttle train to Times Square. Columbia is the 116th Street stop.
