Technologies in 3D Digital Cinema

Abstract:
Digital cinema is a rapidly progressing ecosystem, from image capture to production and projection. 3D technology has provided a strong pull for the migration of digital projectors into local theaters. We will describe fundamental aspects of the two major digital cinema projector platforms (DLP, SXRD) with special regard to the needs of 3D cinema. Additionally, we present several optical and electronic solutions for 3D digital cinema offered by RealD, including the polarization-converting XL and over-under XLS Cinema Systems.
The Speaker:
Dr. Miller Schuck, PhD, Chief Scientist, Optical Systems, RealD.
Dr. Schuck specializes in optical hardware, image processing and color for visual applications, in particular 3D projection and near-to-eye devices. Miller was an integral part of LCOS startup Colorado Microdisplay, Inc., developing illumination and imaging engines for NTE applications including HMD’s and camera viewfinders. He researched specialty lenses for holographic data storage at InPhase Technologies, and more recently, worked at Brillian Corporation developing illumination and imaging systems for LCOS RPTV products. Since joining RealD, Dr. Schuck has focused his efforts on 3D cinema, most notably the successful design and prototyping of the award-winning RealD XL Cinema System. Miller managed the engineering team effort to bring the RealD XL to production, and has recently returned to his roots in the R&D group to focus on advanced development in projection and image capture.
Dr. Schuck received his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado at Boulder where he researched LCOS automotive head-up displays on a fellowship from Ford Motor Company. Dr. Schuck has 9 issued patents and 20+ publications and conference presentations.

After 4:30PM metered parking is also available on 120th Street (be sure to bring a few quarters, the meters run until 10PM and allow 0.5h per quarter). Columbia is on the #1 subway line which connects directly to NJTransit and the LIRR at Penn Station, and the MetroNorth through the subway at Times Square.
